Default Torque wrench questions

I need to replace the valve cover gasket and spark plug seals on my 1997 Xj6L, and I don't have a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the proper pressure. Can I get by without using a torque wrench? I will have access to one in about a week when I get home for Spring break from college, but I'd like to have my car fixed before I go on the 120 mile drive.

If I must have a torque wrench, where can I get one on the SUPER cheap (a little google search showed the prices ranging from $20+, but I'd need it ASAP so I'd like to buy in store)?

Not super cheap, but a fine instrument to have in the tool box.

Yeah. That's kinda horribly out of my budget (which doesn't even exist). I did just read in the x300 Jag-Lovers' Ebook that I don't necessarily NEED to tighten the bolts to proper torque specification. I think I'll tackle the job tomorrow and then check the torque on Saturday when I have access to a torque wrench.

Just be careful!!!!!not too tight, they will strip very easily. Better safe than sorry, you can always finish them up when you get home, but once they are stripped..... well they wont hold at all:>

Looking at the torque wrench in the link it is from 20nm and I think that the torque value on the bolts for the valve cover are 9 to 11 nm. Try Sears or Harbor Freight. By the way nice torque wrench just not one for this job.

A valve cover fastener is not a critical fastener.

Just a bit over finger tight should do it.

Chef, stop by your local auto parts store. You should be able to rent a torque wrench for free. You normally have to put down a deposit, but when you return the tool, you get the deposit back. That way you get the best of both worlds. I know NAPA, Autozone, and Advance (aka, Kragens or Checkers or Schucks) all offer this service. Then all you have to worry about is the plug socket.

Cool. I'll probably replace the parts and then head over to my local Advance.

A torque wrench is not near as critical on your '97 as it would be on an earlier AJ6. The AJ16 cam cover bolts are shoulder type bolts designed to just compress the seals the correct amount. In other words, tightening a little further won't change the pressure on the seal any.

I just saw your other post...... I believe you will be getting a little more practice soon.

Cheers,
