Smile Worthwhile warranty

I bought a used 2003 XK8 coupe about three years ago with the certified warranty in force and a used car dealer warranty for the drive train.

After finding all that was not covered on the drive train warranty and the amount that had been repired under the certified warranty plus a little transmission issue, i purchased the "non-exclusion" warranty from Fidelity through Rusnak Jaguar (southern California). So far it has been a very worthwhile expenditure.

Warranty was around $3K and tha car had to pass inspection (made sure that was done while the other warranty was in place).

Many items which i would not expect to have had a problem with have popped up but were covered. There are still items considered consumables (filters, brakes, rotors, sway bar bushings, tires, belts, hoses, etc.) but they have covered a lot:

Fuel pump replaced (twice) diffferential seals (leaking at output shaft seal again - replace about 20,000 miles ago at 40,000 original miles in shop we will see if they will fix again), tranmission connecting tube, transmission mount, air intake tube, brake sensor, mirror cluster with headlight sensor, steering column assembly, and quite a few other items. Although the prices are steep due to dealer rates, that is born by Fidelity. Rusnak has also proven to be very good at documenting the need to take care of the issue completely.

The current amount the warranty has covered - about $15K, keeping car in top notch condition no rattles, squeaks or leaks at 70,000 miles and there is 20,000 miles still left on the warranty.

Terrified at thought of paying out of pocket for all that and no doubt probably would have shopped around and done some work myself but the warrananty decision was not bad.

www.fidelitywarrantyservices.com go for platinum coverage.

Good luck to all!

My 2003 XK8 has been back out of the shop for about a week now after fuel pump, differential output shaft seals, etc., etc. described above, fixed by the local dealer under fidelity warranty

I had to call the service manager for follow up as the car was performing so well and I am "rather vigorous with follow up" when things are not right. One of the subtle problems they found was a cracked air input tube that evidently had been throwing shift points off as well as messing with the mixture.

These are quite amazing cars on the performance side when you get it all dialed in right.

I still have a few issues:

A tiny clunk we cant seem to demonstrate to the tech as it is silent when we go for a test drive to show the problem.

A creaky seat (have to move every so often to stop it creaking) more on that later.

Inside drivers winow seal and visor spring issue.

Other than that, car is performing like a showroom beauty.

The experience with Rusnak and Fidelity has been very worthwhile.

Rusnak was also kind enought to install my replacement sway bar end bushings while they had stuff apart for the diff seals. I bought the bushings there as they were same price as Jagbits w/o shipping but never did find time to install them.

I did spring for a dealer priced battery to eliminate that possibility on window memory as well as fuel filter to protect new pump (fidelity does not cover consumables, even if associated with a failed product unless you have to remove it to service the failed product).

The Total bill $3,100, my share, including deductible and 70,000 mile service, oil change, battery, fuel filter, installation, etc. $600.

Total to date covered by warranty, minus deductibles about $16k, cost of warranty $3K. I bought the warranty because the car had a downshift issue that manifested right before the factory warranty expired. Oddly, transmission has not had a real problem.

Overall, the car puts a smile on my face again when I drive it. It is a little difficult not to push the right foot down as it moves so nice and sounds so good!

Handling is wonderful.

Quiet - until you ask the cat to growl!

I know this flys in the face of some of the do it yourself attitude but it worked out well here.

Regards to all.

Having a rough idea of what repair costs might be on a Jag, I bought an extended platinum warranty from the dealership for about $1500. The car otherwise would have only had a 30-day warranty and I wasn't driving it off the lot without a little more protection. It was only the 2nd time I actually bought an extended warranty and I'm glad I did. It paid for itself within the first year, and another $1k the following year.

I still had some out of pocket costs because it did not cover some other issues you would think it should. It covered the water pump replacement, but not the thermostat (which with labor still amounted to $400). And then the tech was surprised that it didn't cover ignition coils. After charging me $200 for a coil plus installation I said I'll do the rest on my own. $55 per coil plus 2 minutes with a screw driver is all it took.
