Refinish or replace shift knob

Refinish or replace shift knob
I know you can buy some nice replacement shift knobs on the interwebs but, I was wondering if it's worth the time/cost of having the original redone. I haven't pulled mine off yet so I'm not sure if it gets wrecked in the process or not. Mine isn't scratched or scuffed at all but it has gone "milky" and I would like to fix it.
Just a thought for future reference.
Thanks.

2000jaglvr - I reckon the effort in refinishing the knob isn't worth it. In the uk one can buy a replacement for £15 new (about $22). I would have thought from a breaker's yard they would be even less. Hardly worth the effort.
The knob unscrews - it is on an M8 screw thread. I am looking to replace mine cos the varnish has cracked. Should be a simple enough job.
Jim,
Have a look on a well known auction site - there are a number of gear knobs available in different woods. No idea of the quality but the photos look nice.

Not the cheapest option ... but definitely the nicest

But I already blew my one allowed "special car related wish" on a laser level ... sigh
