it's been my experience that those ad networks which put the little double underline on certain words almost always slow down page rendering significantly.

you might find that by removing it the CTR to other ads may increase due to a more pleasant user experience.

 

Unfortunately I discovered that disabling Javascript also disabled my yahoo mail browser.
Tried "prompt" setting , but yahoo won't accept that either..just goes into an endless loop of yes no yes no...
so back to the slowest site I have encountered since dial up.
Why has this only reared it's ugly head in the past week or so?
Can you suggest another mail browser to try?
It seems to be the only program affected negatively by disabling Javascript

It's currently taking approximately 30 - 45 seconds to load each page, sometimes longer. Occasionally, (and seeming to coincide with the ad for some brand of locks), the page stalls and won't load at all.

I don't really want to change browsers, disable anything or jump through too many hoops in order to access one particular site. As much as I like it here, I just don't think that's called for.

I'll be checking in once in a while to see if y'all get it worked out, but the current situation has pretty much killed the site for me.

Phil, unfortunately Yahoo mail is web based, which effectively means that your email account is really a web site, in the same way as Hotmail, Gmail, etc.

You could set up Outlook or Outlook Express to be a stand alone email client, that way you would not need to use your browser to access your email, and so leave Java disabled.

Retro, sorry to hear this, thought you were a bit conspicuous by your absence

Simply download and install and Ad blocker for whatever browser you are using, follow the instructions and within 5 minutes ALL adverts are history.

I have a real crappy Internet connection currently downloading some software at a mega fast '61KB/s', but with NO adverts the forum is pretty instantaneous.

Also last week, the forum moved to its own dedicated servers, which means it should be faster not slower.

 

FWIW, I just compared IE9 back to back with Firefox for loading speed on this site. IE took 3-4 times longer or more to load any given page. Javascript is enabled on both browsers.............

Sometimes knuckle-draggers like myself just need to be pointed in the right direction.

I followed your recommendation and installed AdBlock Plus. (I'm so proud, didn't even need to find a 10 year old to show me how!)

Site speed is back to normal, and I'm a happy camper.

I used to use outlook, but have been using yahoo since getting adroid smart phone and accessing mail from both pc and phone. Can you access oulook remotely in the same way?
Alternatively, would ad blocker for IE work for me, or is it going to interfere with yahoo as well?
Your advice is greatly appreciated. I'm on a learning curve with my computer skills here.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Your advice got me looking into previously unknown depths of my computer.
With your help, and search tools, I discovered that Windows 7 has an inbuilt utility known as tracking protection lists.
Click on tools, scroll next door to safety, and under there you find tracking protection list.
You can download any number of lists, created by third parties from the internet (just search tracking protection list).
The first one I downloaded still allowed the ads on this site. I then downloaded another, and hey presto ads are gone, and site running fast again.
My yahoo mail is still working, so it appears that all is well once again.
I hope this might help someone else in the same predicament one day.

Good that you got things worked out Phil, for info the Fanboy group is based in NZ. Theirs is one of the TPLs I have installed.

Suggest that you keep an eye on things, and you may need to download a specific list depending on your country specific browsing habits.

Hey Retro, Congrats', 10 year olds are never around when you need one, my advice was somewhat self centered, we don't want to lose anyone, and I am waiting for an update on the 'Hindenburg'.

Heck, we created a whole forum for You, Clive and RotoMike et al, so time to pull out the old finger and have at those keys!
