Lemme get you a link, this is from the XK8 FAQ sticky, the first few pages shows the location of all the numbers on your car. This microfiche download also gives some insight.

Engine number quest
Despite all the pointers, I am still having a time locating my engine number and am right on the cusp of the Nikasil era and so really want to find it.
On page 3 of this Vehicle Spec PDF you have provided (thanks) it shows a 2001 MY onward SN location (A) that is not near the t-stat housing (where I have searched every visible cm), but I can't figure out what the illustration is depicting - what area is that diagram supposed to represent?
Thanks!
**Got a clue Dept... found this clarification after this post:
"The engine number on a 2000 is on a vertical rib on the left side of the block, viewed from undrneath, just above the steering rack. It will look something like 0008182310.
00= year
08= month
18=day
23=hour
10=minute
That's the built date of the engine, which has no direct relationship to the built date of the car. If the engine number is before 000818xxxx, it has Nikasil bores."
That explains the diagram - Thanks!

Yes it does but it is not the engine serial number. It describes the bearing used in the assembly of the engine.
The easiest way is still to call the dealer. With the VIN they can look up the engine serial number along with all the other build data of the car, produce a print out and hand it to you.

Steve:
The pdf is a good piece of data, but it does not actually show the location of WHERE the serial number moved to. It is interesting to note the Jag service brochure claims the move co-incided with the change to steel liners.... I wonder if I am mistaken about the engine in my '99, or if it was possibly replaced? I've got some stuff figure out when I get bored.

Hey guys, just found a youtube video that shows the engine manufacture date pretty clearly. Its a water pump replacement on a 98 Vanden Plas but at about 29 seconds in it clearly shows the code scribed onto the block just behind where the thermostat mounts, which I thinks reads as Feb, 22, 1998.

Of course, it depends on which side the steering rack is on! As I recall, the new serial number location is on the LHS engine near the engine mount. The numbers on a rib on the RHS is the engine build data. The documents say the move coincided with Nikasil to steel liners (2001), but I am not so sure about that.
