1967 420G LH front caliper
Hi my name is Paul and I work at an independent shop Coventry Cars here in So Cal (San Diego). I work on a lot of older Jags. XKE, MK2, Series 1-3 Xj6 etc. I have one customer that has a 420G that gets driven very regularly. The LH front caliper must have had one on the bolts come loose and on brake application the caliper broke. Can't say I've ever seen that before (although it happened to one of the rear ones and I converted it to Ser 3 rear brakes). The front calipers are only on late model MK10 4.2 and 420G. Ser 1 XJ6, XKE and 420 are all different.
Looking for a LH front caliper for a 420G. Part # C26914 (I think?). A good re-buildable core is fine. I have looked into converting it to some other (Jaguar) brakes but these cars have 14in wheels and the Ser 1 XJ6 brakes would take changing the stub axle carrier and 15in wheels. Unless someone knows of another European car that might have similar Dunlop brakes.
Thanx paul

So the steel casting that holds the two piston assemblies has broken, correct ? The SNG Barratt website tells us these are NLA, but they sell a pair of modern-type calipers as a replacement, ($704). This doesn't seem too bad a price, but does your customer want to spend the money ?

Only alternative is to find a used one from a US Jaguar specialist. You can always find the cylinders, it's special parts that are problematic.

The 420G calipers are unique and using something aftermarket would take some doing. I looked at the Wilwood site and there are a variety of calipers that are specifically for 14in wheels. Then it would require some customization of a bracket to adapt the caliper to the stub axle upright like on XKE conversions. The early MK10, XKE and 420G all have different diameter rotors all non-vented. I tried to fit an XKE caliper using an early MK10 rotor/hub which is the smallest and it would still rub on the rotor outer diameter. Not to mention the 420G takes a larger bolt size for mounting. The Ser 1 has a similar caliper to the XKE. I tried a wheel from the 420G on a Ser 1 in the shop and the wheel is too small to fit. It binds on the caliper.
The idea of some better brakes would be nice. I did notice an improvement when we put Ser 3 rear calipers on. I did search through most of my regular contacts here in CA and some other sources in the states. No one with a 420G caliper. I think I may have found one some what local through another customer with a 420G and a local Jag club member. He just put me in touch with a guy about an hour away that has three 420G parts cars. He said I'm more than welcome to the caliper as long as I come remove it. Hopefully one of them can be rebuilt. Just have to figure out getting out of the shop for a few hours to go and get it.
