Default Jaguar Mk IX radiator and cooling

Good evening everyone Could I please ask for advice on 2 questions regarding my 1960 Mk IX
Firstly I want to take the radiator out to have if overhauled, there is a constant drip from the drain tap. So I have undone everything that I can see, the cross member for the bonnet catch, grille etc - the radiator is now free however it seems too wide to lift upwards and remove from the car - am I missing something? I started to look at removing the main frame that the radiator fixing bolts attach to however that doesn't look like a straightforward job - any advice would be greatly received
I am also constantly looking at the temperature gauge in the summer, as we all know these engines can overheat very quickly. does anyone have any experience fitting an electric fan? I was wondering if the electric load may be too much for the dynamo system and whether I would need to upgrade to an alternator? if that is the case how do I deal with the power steering pump which is driven from the back of the current dynamo?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Graham

Back in the 1970~80s I had a Mercedes that had an auxiliary thermo-switch controlled fan; in heavy traffic, it ran a good bit more than I liked. Knowing what happens to aluminum cylinder heads on iron blocks when over-heated, I had the radiator re-cored with an "XL" core, which had four rows of vertical tubes as opposed to two in the OE unit. This helped significantly.

Fast forward to today, given that modern radiators are all aluminum and plastic, I don't know if the above heavy duty copper radiator core is even available, but it might be worth looking into.

Good luck getting her sorted!

You need to remove all the brackets and framing to pull the radiator up through the top.

Ok Thanks Mike, that's helpful
I have undone the 3 bolts on each side and the 2 nuts and long bolts at the bottom of the frame holding the radiator, I have also removed the top cross member which contains the bonnet stay as well - I can't see any other fixings at all however the frame is still very firmly in place and not moving - have I missed a hidden fixing? is there a trick I don't know about to free the frame from the car?
Thanks in advance
Graham

Have you removed the front grill and the four bolts at each corner at the front of the radiator?

Hi Mike

Yes I have removed the 4 radiator fixing bolts and the front grill - looking at your picture I have removed everything - I was wondering if I needed to remove the radiator fixing bracket with the 3 bolts each side in your photo but it appears not!

Many thanks for your help Mike

Best regards
Graham

I’m sorry Graham, I can’t think of anything else that would be holding it in place.

Thanks Mike

I have now managed to remove the radiator - it was extremely tight with the cooling veins against the fan blade, I managed to protect the veins with some cardboard

once again thank you so much for you help
