I have a 1999 Xk8, luv it, it just hit 180K miles, had some leaks around oil pan and head with i had taken care of, I was told there was a leak around the timing chain area, i shop I had complete the work didn't have the correct tool too fix that leak, at time when I'm in sport mode at a stand still when i give it gas a puff of smoke will come will leave the tail pipes, I'm planning on taking this car into my golden years, would it be better to have the motor rebuilt or replaced. I also notice the front in not feeling tight as before, I'm sure the owner before me did very little pre-maintenance work before he traded it in. Can anyone advise me,

I'm reaching out to a few of the obviously more knowledgable members of this forum directly rather than putting something on the general board. Sorry for any hassle....
I found a 99 XJ8 (for F-I-L) that's mint inside and out - only 60K on her. Problem? The motor of course. I was hoping for tensioner noise, but it's not that. I'm mechanical (I did my own tensioners and chains), but diagnosis is past my skill set. The noise is in the RH bank. Sounds "kinda" like if you rolled two marbles in your hand, somewhat quickly, with a low squeak once in a while. It is not a constant noise though, and also not for the same amount of time when it does make the noise. The motor generally sounds strong, aside from this. Seems to be up high, like in the cam area. Asking a lot but....... your thoughts? Guesses on repair costs? I'm not looking to replace the motor, just can't believe it sounds so good otherwise and be shot.
