    Thanks Paul.
I checked the pump fuse: ok
I received answers to my post and will disconnect the pump tomorrow and see the results (voltage). I'll remove and check the pump relay aswell. sounds unusual, but why not ?
    Regards
    Mike

    Hi Brett
I had to wait until the car released the lock and then did the fix. Because it is so unpredictable I think I got lucky and it did not take long for me to try pulling the fuse with the steering in "normal" unlocked state. I think at one time I disconnected the battery and gave it 5 minutes and then reconnected and had the steering column in the unlocked state.
I could never predict which way it would go so good luck. But I believe 5 minutes with the battery disconnected can reset some systems and then you can pull the fuse. But I am sure it will work for you once the steering is unlocked.

    Good luck Paul

    Hi Brett
I posted this reply on the forum before I read your message to me.

    My solution below.
The reason the problem appears to be rare is that USA cars don't have the column lock and so don't get the problem (posted to me by a Jag Tech on the forum when originally looking for an answer)

It has been about two years without a problem starting.

"had this problem with my S type. The solution, for me, was to pull the 10 amp blue fuse. No. 19 in the fuse box near driver's feet. This will prevent the steering column lock from working and the car will start reliably. Pulling out fuse 19 won't effect any other electrics (other than the steering tilt mechanism).

Although this is only an interim repair it is better than the intermittent non start issue, and for me it is a permanent answer until someone comes up with a definitive answer to the problem."

Good luck and post back if you find a complete solution.

gday Paul my names brett and this afternoon i went to start my 2001 3'0lt s-type i turned the key everything powered up but it wouldn't start or turn over and the steering wheel is locked. The dash reads "Steering column locked "when you turn the key. I removed fuse #19 but that didnt release it,
Can you give me any info or have any new ideas.
    cheers Brett
