maybe someone adapted the flared trumpet used in the Series 3 XJ-6 ?

Someone told me the hose extension and seal in the S type air filter "muffler" were deleted in the late S type because they were so close to the manifolds the rubber seal joiner became goo inmediately and the flex hose became dry and cracked. And because the hose end or "mouth" was parked right by the radiator where it was sucking hot air into the intake. Supposedly not good.

What exactly is the assembly you need for the car? The normal pancake style used in the MK-2 ? I bet I can find one.

Obviously that AC-fabricated air filter muffler you describe came from a S type or 420.

By "muffler" I mean the shape of it. Sure looks like a muffler doesn't it?

It's non standard. I've been studying every detail of the S Type for over 30 years. It did not come out of Browns Lane flared & fitted to an S. I have never seen a Factory Bulletin deleting the convoluted pipe either. SA assembled S Types had them right up until the end as did 420's. We probably built the last S Type in the world & the last 420.

Jose thanks--we have obtained the correct "muffler" for this early oil bath car. Our intention is to service the oil bath and return it to stock. The key for us was to stop looking at a MK2 SPC and go to the 3.4L Saloon SPC (aka MK1). I took a hard look at the other removed system and if it was modified it was done by a metal pro. We may have sent this thread off track by saying it was from an 'S'. as with the exception of the trumpet it is the same. Going to take a look today at the parts manual for the fire truck and bus applications for the XK engine. I know it is not military as those had a snorkel.
