Default 1963 mk2 front brakes

i got my mk2 as a apart project, it came with 4 rebuilt brake cylinders. 2 have sq. pads but 2 have round pads. the numbers on the round pad units don't match anything in the parts book. i can't ell if they are front or back . i don't even know if they will fit the mounting plates that are also in the box..i have seen that there a shims to put mk2 on a mk1 . but has anyone tried puting the mk1s on a 1963 mks. maybe i should get rid of them and just get rebuilt mk2s. any help is well appreciated.

I believe a 1963 MK2, in fact all Mk2s and late Mk1s, should have square pads on all wheels. Round pads were fitted on some MK1 cars. Is it possible your car has some MK1 parts? The round pads are more difficult to change.

If the pads and calipers are wrong, it would be a good idea to check other parts: uprights, wishbones, rear axle

YOu should not have round pads on your Mark 2, and it is a puzzle where they came from in your pile of bits, but a Mark 1 is more likely, and the owner just didn't have the knowledge to know they were not correct. The later, square pad calipers were brought in to make brake pad replacement much quicker and easier. What I'm not sure about is whether the later square pads require a different caliper to that used for the round pad type. It they're the same, it's just a matter of buying a couple of square pad piston assemblies. Of course, you could consider just replacing the lot with modern low maintenance calipers made for fitting to Mark 2s.

Edit
A quick look on the SNG Barratt website shows the two types have no compatibility. Best to find a pair of the later calipers and piston assemblies, as tey are freely available.
