We have a whole section devoted to OT on MBWorld. e.g. if someone wants to talk politics ~ not cars, and subsections to that. Difficult to Moderate as you can imagine. Many members end up in the sin bin for long periods.
Having a vibrant OT section is considered healthy by Internet Brands Automotive.

We have a section here for that also without the politics, otherwise pretty much anything you want to discuss.
Thanks Norri. The politics is what gets spicy! IBA have encouraged us to let that run. It generates a lot of posts/traffic as you can imagine. Political Discussions is a particular subsection of the OT & clearly identified. If you don't want to go there then don't click on it. It can get angry. It also experiences violent swings that run in typical style with upcoming elections, a disliked politician, news of the day etc. Many have been permanently banned there.
It is the only reason some members join the board. They are not interested in the cars & seldom post anywhere else if ever. We have weeded out a particularly nasty bunch that sullied our good name, then tried to form their own forum that died.

I decided that I liked this AC unit the best. The controls are mounted right in the face of the unit and I was thinking it would go under the parcel shelf and above the transmission tunnel. I decided I could relocate the radio/ashtray/vent controls somewhere else.
So armed with the dimensions from the website, I built a cardboard box to the exact dimensions of the unit. This would let me see how well it would fit in the space I was considering.
The answer was "not very good". With the lower parcel shelf in place the front edge of the unit would end up right at the shift lever.
I removed the lower parcel shelf to see what my options looked like if I sectioned out the center of the shelf. Even still, with the box all the way back, I only had about 2" between the box and the shifter when it was in 1st or 3rd gear. It's too close but I'm getting closer. I need to look at a few more units from other vendors but the lack of space is becoming a major concern.
Moving back to the alternator and AC compressor mounting bracket, I slightly revised my design to keep the plate closer to the block. Rather than a plate going straight up from the motor mount and using 1.25" spacers at the original alternator mount, I'm considering a zig-zag approach on the plate.

This is for the Vintage Air unit but I'm pretty sure it's the size of the actual unit, not the shipping box. I'm calling them Monday about something else but will confirm.
If those dimensions are correct, and I'm sure they are, then I can see why it won't fit, a foot deep and 5-1/4 inches thick is pretty big.
It's not all 5-1/4 inches deep though, it looks as if the motors at the back may be able to tuck in a little more than your box would have you believe.
You bring up a really good point and it just reminded me of something I learned last year working on my 1989 XJS. I took out the Delenair system and replaced it with a Vintage Air GenII Super. I bought the mock-up box they sell, but when I got the actual unit I realized that I could remove the blower fan and relocate it.
Since most of these units look like they have a lot of the same cases, I bought this unit off of Amazon for $97 delivered tomorrow.
Yes it looks cheap and yes it is cheap - but it will let me see what an actual unit looks like in my dash and if I decide I need to cut and relocate the fans - I'd rather do that with a $97 unit than a $450 unit. More to come and thank you @JeffR1 for knocking a memory into the front of my brain.

Those dimensions sound close to the actual size of the unit. Let's use the back of a napkin and estimate the depth of the unit.
The blower wheel diameter of the blower wheel is 4"
The blower scroll expansion will add 1.5"
The distance from blower outlet to evaporations core 1.5"
The evaporator core depth of 4"
The distance from blower outlet to evaporations core to the vent outlets 1"
This gives you ~12" of depth.
I have seen many pictures of 420 with under dash units and the one thing that always jump out at me is that they don't look right. I mean they don't look factory installed. Lyons/Jaguar did a great job styling the instrument panel and console.
Here is a possible for a front unit. Using Vintage Air mini slimline dash unit 10301-VUY-A. Mount the unit on the passenger side, if it doesn't block the passenger's leg room. Cut the vent area off and blow the air up through the package tray. Use the packaging tray ares to make a duct to distribute the air across the front of the vehicle. (I hope this shows up) (see attachment)
P.S.I believe Vintage Air will send/sell you empty housings for packaging purposes.
Similar to Prof Gregory's that I also show with the above pic in post 120 of this thread with it's front removed & ducted as suggested above. The newer units should be more efficient.
This is a late 420 dash nicely restored. Upholstery colour cinnamon. Offered on the final cars. That box hanging between the dash & the shelf is the genuine Jaguar AC controller. Evapourator remains in the trunk/boot.

If the black Rexine surround to your dash is in any way cracked or damaged & you wish to fix it. You can get pre-made black leather covers as used in pic above. You wet the leather and shrink it on as above. Suggest you get the job done by someone that does it every day. I was fascinated with my trim specialist & watching him work with wet leather. Then turn over edges & glue in place. Not so much on my S Type (which is mainly wood) but he was doing a Merc SL Roadster at the same time. Drop head version of the Gull Wing (doors). It has much leather stretched over panels such as the wide interior side panels inside the sills for strength without a metal roof.

When I looked at this picture in the past I thought there were flexible hoses behind the lower parcel shelf/dash and it always confused me because there is NO room in my car for one hose, much less the three that would need to stretch to somewhere around the middle of the parcel shelf.
Are you saying that the lower parcel shelf has been modified to become the air duct? I know it's a crude picture but is this what you're saying is happening in this picture?
If that's the case then my life just became much easier.
