So what goes wrong with an SU pump, poor design, or lack of maintenance ?
Personally I think lack of maintenance and or lack of use, and even storage, owners don't seem to realize that the points and condenser have to be replaced at what, 10K or 20K, just like the points and condenser in a distributor.
When things go wrong, it's the pumps fault, it's not a modern car, even modern cars have their problems and leave the owners stranded on the side of the road when the electric motors brushes have failed on the fuel pump.
Lack of maintenance _ the MAF sensor needs cleaning, fuel filters, air cleaners, spark plugs and wires. People drive them until it quits and blame the car.
I'll give you this, the diaphragm becomes hard and crusty from lack of use and the electromagnet can't overcome the stiffness of the diaphragm and it won't work, or improper storage in a non-heated garage, and the points are so oxidized, they won't make contact.
When I belonged to the RR club, there were cars that were looked after from day one, mainly because they were expensive coach-built cars with very little milage on them, they changed owners as the previous owner passed away and the car was sold.
The car still had the untouched pump in it. If it was my car I would service the pump, but what ever.
I serviced the pump in the Jag shortly after I bought it some 20 years ago, it was still OK, but the points were worn a little crooked, and from the looks of it, they were installed crooked.
Which brings me to another problem, the DIY-selfer doesn't really know how to service it, even with the instruction right in front of them, they put it back together and it doesn't work, or it fails soon after because something was not done correctly _ and the pump gets blamed.
It's a fiddly job, that requires some patients and skill.
My luck I would get the electronic pump where it would fail shortly, I don't like electronic stuff for this reason, I can't repair it.
I will argue that there is nothing wrong with and SU fuel pump, it's the owners who are used to driving a modern car and lack of maintenance to the pump as to why they fail.
I would rather service a pump, then rely on an electronic one that may or may not fail early in its life.

We will agree to disagree & call it a day. You are welcome to your lousy SU pumps with their poor & deserved reputation.
This discussion is over! There will never be resolution or agreement.

Amen. I am going to buy a couple soon, but while waiting for that I will try to restore one. Seems having two pumps will help if one dies.

Please start a new thread for each topic starting with this one for your radio.

Or have your own thread as I do & remind people immediately they go off topic ~ OT
It's sometimes nice to have everything together. I only had one real breach with Jose posting a bunch of awful steering wheels.
You can see my example in my signature. Your choice. Or listen to Cass. He is a highly logical chap.

There are a couple of sites ~ 1 mainly that is devoted to car radios of every manufacturer, size, color & vintage. I have guests but will try & find it for you later. I used it when searching for a period radio for my restoration. Found one NOS & perfect.

Posterity for you perhaps but no good for anyone else who has a similar problem or question and can't find the answer. When they can't find the answer, the question gets posted again and we either repeat the answer or point them towards 100 plus pages of information in one thread. Great for you but no one else. Sorry if I am being harsh here but we have had this conversation before with others.

dsnyder, you can ask any question you want in any thread you want and just ignore the non-moderators. Threads are discussions of many subjects and nothing is written in stone.
my two old SU pumps are still good. They might need the points cleaned / adjusted but there is a video in youtube showing how to adjust them.
If your car was originally exported to California, it should have an aluminium tag the size of a quarter coin screwed to the firewall above the factory I.D. plate that reads "J-65" or "J-66" as it was required by Calif. DOT back then.
( J for Jaguar, 65 or 66 for year of manufacture).
If you want to see my steering wheel replacements in both my S type and XJ6 I can post them. I don't like the factory school bus-sized steering wheels, so I replaced them with 15" wheels. Moss Motors in Goleta Calif. has a line of wheels called "Tourist Trophy", excellent quality in wood or leather, thin or thick grip.
About the radio: California had many manufacturers of AM radios in the 1960's, so yours might be a dealer-installed unit. My S type came with an unknown dealer-installed radio too. I replaced it with a 1980's Jaguar XJ-6 radio and added the Clarion 7.5" Inch speakers to the kick panels where there is a perfect hole for them.

You are right I am not a moderator and have no plans or wishes to be one but there is no need to be uncivil about it telling people to ignore me!. Threads are discussions which can be on many subjects but sometimes it is also nice to be specific about certain subjects.
You have already crossed Glyn please don't do the same with me. I am a nice guy.

Cass, true and stupid? that's a new one.
have you ever used the SEARCH function ? it never yields the result you seek, so....have fun!
besides, new members can always count on you to let them know in which thread the answer is, complete with a link to it and post number.
So, instead of being harsh to new members, and then apologizing for being harsh, just direct them to the thread and post number.

Those that are technically incompetent should not post in certain threads. They should shut up & learn. It is the only way that forums work well.
I did not scold you then & I'm not scolding you now. Just take heed. Automotive technology is not your strength. You have many other things of value that you can contribute.

and YOU decide what those "certain threads" are?
aren't you a "super moderator" in a Mercedes Benz forum?
why aren't you "super moderating" in that forum?
were you kicked out?
Why do you spend all your time harassing membera of this forum with your arrogance ? You are not a moderator here, certainly not super either

Internet Brands asked me if I wanted to mod here as well & I said no. They know where I spend my time on forums of theirs. Mostly MBWorld.
My presence at MBWorld is the reason we are allowed to use the Benz WIS & EPC unedited. If they lost me they would lose that access. Talking Super Moderators I'm also an Ambassador. See the MBWorld site.
Why have you not assembled your engine & got your car back on the road?
Stop fighting ~ I'm not.

Also, and it may be worth noting- please look at my post count.
I will learn from those who share, and I will share with those who will learn.
This thread is for posting the story of my renovation, hopefully and likely it will help many along the way as my other posts have. I will not be posting multiple threads about each situation I run across in this resto. Hopefully that will not turn the experts away from helping me when I run into speed bumps.
As always, Cheers- no hard feelings.

Same with a couple other local mechanics locally each with different excuses.
So everything is ready but no technician. And I don't mess with engine assembly.
