340 Auto box
Having got the 340 back on the road after a 24 year lay up I have been taking it on increasingly longer runs and recently did a 420 mile trip around the North of Scotland when it it ran without a hitch and performed really well, so I was more than happy!! Yesterday pulling away from a junction as it took up drive the box/drive, started making a grinding/rattling noise, the car drove home the quarter mile or so without any trouble, In park or neutral there is no noise at all and the car will take up drive in all positions. box or torque convertor???

Only an auto transmission specialist can tell you for certain, but there is a one-way clutch on all torque converters and this could have failed. I would think this not unusual for a car of this age. These things can be repaired but only by specialists as the welds holding the thing together have to be drilled out, the converter repaired, and then the two halves are welded back together again.
I'd take it to an auto transmission specialist if I were you. If it is the gearbox itself, it would have to be rebuilt as there is no regular demand for these things, hence no service exchange boxes.
