If you're adventurous there is a way to "choke" the carbs without doing anything mechanical. There are lifting pins on the side of the carb that lift the piston. If you lifted those and then hit the starter solenoid button on the firewall ( with your third hand!), you would have introduced extra fuel to enable starting. You wouldn't have opened the throttle any, so it might still not work.
The E type arrangement isn't that complicated, and I think you can get all the parts from Burlen, or scavenge them off used E bay carbs. The 2 vs 3 carb arrangement might mean the length of the rod needs to be changed, but that's a simple exercise to do that and thread it.
