Default Can someone help me ID this part?

Does anyone know what this silver cylinder is on the firewall of my 1967 420? It's just to the right of the centerline and has a single +12v wire going to it. It does not protrude into the fresh air vent area.
I looked through my spare parts catalogue but can't figure out it's purpose. Any ideas?

It's a plug in point for an under bonnet inspection lamp. Just in case you get the urge to change sparkplugs in the dark, you have a place to plug in a light to see what you're doing.

Originally this power point would have had this little gadget plugged into it. (See photo) This is a plug that you are able to put the two wires from your inspection light into and then plug this into the power point. The two screws secure the bared wires of the inspection lamp or any other 12v device into the plug. All S types had this power point under the bonnet on the front left inner wing. I believe all Mk2s also had the power point but there are not many that still have the plug though.

The plug point was originally intended for an under bonnet brass inspection light, that looked as though it came out of the ark, that was available from Lucas/Jaguar so that you could see what you are doing at night. Land Rover originally had them on the dashboard & not in the cupped housing.

I use it in reverse to plug my battery maintenance charger into so that I can close the bonnet & keep dust off of my engine.

Yes that is a winding handle to recover the cord. One ring is supposed to be black & one red. I have tried to achieve that wrinkle finish but have not got it right yet. The red & black rings are still available new off eBay. These female plugs are becoming as rare as .....

I'm curious to what search you used to find the red and black rings on eBay
