Confused - distributor and TDC position

Confused - distributor and TDC position
Hi Chaps,
I'm a bit confused. About to install electronic ignition distributor and coil on 3.8 mk2 (powersparx).
I turned the engine so the timing mark on front pulley matches the pointer (clearly painted on later i.e. to avoid looking a starter ring). In this position the distributor points to number 1 (front) lead, not 6 as I was expecting.
When I attach a timing light to the number 6 it coincides (about 4 degrees advance) with this timing mark as I would expect.
What's going on? Is this incorrect? Should I match arm of rotor on new distributor to the same position i.e. point it to lead 1 at TDC.
Engine currently working fine (except occasional poor starts and misfires hence electronic ignition).
Thanks for any help.
Adam
