Cooling & Heating system re-plumb
Hello,
I've recently acquired a 1962 Mk2 3.8. I twas stood for quite a few years so am slowly going through it and servicing/ replacing stuff.
Am about to tackle the cooling/ heating system but this is where it gets tricky. The car was originally a 2.4 but has been upgraded at some poin with a 3.8 litre engine.
The engine has come out of a track/ road racer so a few things have been modified. The heater is not connected up no pipes there.
thermostat has been blanked off at the front and there is some kinby pass pipe running from the water pump to the back of the engine.
So i want to put this back to normal, I've a heater pipe kit from SNG barratts and a full hose replacement hose kit, New thermostat and housing.
Does anyone have a full diagram of the standard cooling and heating system for the pipes what goes where and what etc.
Am struggling to find anything definitive. I jut need something relatively simple so i can connect all the hoses up to the correct places.
Many thanks

go to my website and download the MK-2 shop manual which will have illustrations of all the systems. I have other MK-2 documents in .pdf format free.

I had those light covers but sold them. Glad you like the site. S type and MK-2 share many parts but not the Heater tap. The S type heater tap is very difficult to find in good condition. MK-2 uses a different tap which I think is still available.
Since you have a 3.8 it will be easier to plumb it. Plumbing starts at the water pump.
I recently purchased new heater / coolant tubes in stainless steel for my S type, the ones that run behind the cylinder head to the heater box. SNG Barratt USA store has them new.

So heater box is back from refurbishment and upgrade and am ready to start putting it back in the car.
Cleaned out the control valve and put a new o-ring in and attached the cables.
However am not sure if i am missing something here if you look on the pictures there is a solid wire coming off the heather control valve in addition to the pull cable.
I cant work out what this attaches to or does ? or is it something that has been left on my particular control valve.
I've had a look on lins site and landie man but i cant see anything definitive for it,
Can anyone shed any light on it as i don't want to install it and it be connected wrong and have to take it all out as
once this is done i can drain the the whole cooling system and fit all the new pipes and hoses.
thanks everyone

I had a look at my car. It's exactly as Glyn describes. The Bowden cable passes through the bulkhead to the heat control lever inside the car. The unsleaved wire goes from the. water valve to a lever on the heater box that moves the hot/cold flap inside. The arrangement is adjusted such that the flap and valve work suitably in synch. I wanted to take a photo, but it's not an accessible area. In particular, the flap lever is largely hidden behind the fan box.

thanks guys
its obvious now you show it and explain.
I didn't really have a lot to go on as it was all disconnected when i removed it, which always makes it harder putting it back together.
I'll give it another go tomorrow when the snow has gone and its above freezing in thw garage.
cheers again
