I think that if you are willing to go through the work to put a different engine I would recommend a GM LS aluminum block/head LS1 or LS3. It is a lot of work no matter what engine you use so to me these cars really are so much fun when they have increased power so that you can be competitive in todays world of modern cars.
Also a GM LS engine is so popular that will make it easier as there are so many aftermarket parts made to use the engines in many different cars. As an example there are at least four different short and narrow headers to make it easy to fit in many custom applications. Additionally there are so many tuners and aftermarket computers so that you can customize the ECU to match your Jaguar exactly (tire size, wheel diameter, rear end gearing, etc.) The LS engines are lighter than the stock Jaguar engine, provides reliable horsepower from 400-800 HP, will easily last 250,000-300,000 miles, lighter than the stock Jag engine, modern fuel injection ideal for a daily driver, and low maintenance costs.

I am running my stock Jaguar 3.8s IRS diff which I believe is 3.7 gears. This works great for all around performance as I can cruise at 70-80 on the free way at 2500 rpm and off the line the car will pull 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. My setup is the normal factory trans that comes with the LS1. Any swap is a LOT of work so to me it is worth it to go for more real HP. The LS1 or LS3 with no turbo, no supercharger, no nitrous will get 425 to 550 HP with just very minor upgrades like a mild street cam, upgraded ECU, headers, and a cold air intake.
