General MK2 (Stupid!!) Questions

of course the glovebox lamp is totally useless lighting the inside of the glovebox, but it sure is a pretty blue light when it comes on in the dark!
sometimes I just stare at mine like a total idiot!

I checked with SNG Barrat UK and it shows NO LONGER AVAILABLE in their online catalog. Part No. C18118
same for the Glovebox lamp assembly Part No. C16008
what they do have available is the Map Lamp assy. Part No. C15486
The glovebox door switch is of the same principle as a door switch for the interior lights, but in miniature.

I made a discovery yesterday, I'm going to share it here, please send any $$ donations to me
The Discovery:
First: I own a 1965 3.8 'S' and also a 1984 XJ-6 (Series 3).
yesterday I was warming up the XJ-6 and started testing all the lights, windows, everything electrical, everything worked except the glovebox lamp.
(NOTE: in the S type and the XJ, the glovebox lamp comes on ONLY when the headlights switch is in any of its 'ON' positions, so keep that in mind).
So I started fiddling with the spring-switch, sprayed a squirt of WD40, got it working again and all of a sudden it dawned on me:
it's the same LAMP as in the S type and almost identical switch! Actually it's even better because the lamp housing in the XJ is chromed, but the LENS is WHITE as opposed to the BLUE LENS in the S type and MK-2. Otherwise identical parts except for housing finish and lens color.
I'm now thinking the lamp is the same in the 420, and the XJ-Series 1 and 2 as well, not to mention other Jaguar models.
so...for those looking for a glovebox lamp and switch for their MK-2 or S type which they can't find, go to a Series 3 XJ-6 or 12 and you can "extract" the glovebox lamp and switch from it.
Here's a picture of the XJ-6 glovebox lamp and switch. Fresh from yesterday!

An Excellent Reference
Eric Kriss recently hosted a tech session for the Jaguar Association of New England. His nuts & bolt restoration, upgrading & modernizing of a 1961 Mk2 is extensively documented & cross-referenced on his blog: Jaguar Mk2 Restoration - Kriss Motors progress blog. I find it a valuable reference regarding my recently acquired 1967 Mk2/340.
Cheers & good luck,

If your car is 1957, it ain't a Mark 2, but the earlier Mark 1. Actually it was never called a Mark 1 by Jaguar, but the Jaguar 2.4 and 3.4. The Mark 2 from 1959 onwards was a clever update of the Mark 1, so the seats should fit, but check the mountings.

Hi,
looks like you have the answers, just one point re dipstick, the 2.4 and 3.4/3.8 have different part numbers for the dipsticks, although the bottom end is the same the dipsticks must vary, there a a total of 4 different part numbers for different engine numbers on the 2.4 or dipstick arrangement (i.e. guide tube) on 3.4/3.8.
In theory they should be the same length into the sump, but better not to assume when it comes to oil levels, I had an engine blow up on me after I bought a vehicle where someone had cut 3 inches off the dipstick tube, so a full sump was actually empty !
