I will post pics of those in a separate thread.

OK, so I'm trying to get the timing cover off so I can replace the tensioners/guides etc.
I haven't yet lowered the sump (because the weather outside is horrible and I don't fancy lying underneath the car) but I'm really hoping I can lower it enough for the cover to clear it and come off.
I've got the pulley off of the front, and I assume the harmonic balancer has to come off as well, is that a circlip in there holding it on?

It's a conical split bush on the dampener, no circlip, there are some woodruff key's in there too so don't lose them.
Is there any play in the water pump, can you move it in-out or side to side, and is there any sign of leaking ?
If you hold the timing chains sideways horizontally, how much sag is there in the chain from end to end ?
Re Sprockets, can you post pics showing the tips of the teeth on all sprockets, I can't see clearly in the pics what the wear is like.

I'll try and take some better photos. I've heard of these locating dowels but I'm not really sure whereabouts they are and what way they face?
Doesn't appear to be any play in the water pump.
I haven't got the chains out yet, don't I need to get the cover off first for that?
Maybe easiest just to bring the bits with me when I come to collect the head?

When I rebuilt my water pump I bought a kit from David Manners, I remember if being quite cheap but you need a press to fit it (to get the impeller on).
I've just found the link to it:
Jaguar Partno_PK5500_WATER PUMP REP KIT MK2, E-TYPE XK140/50_David Manners Group with Alts
As its a bit of a pain to get to the water pump I would just do it all now while you have it apart.

Yes you do need to get the cover off to get the timing chains off.
Bring the parts up for sure, I will take a look at them, will email you re possibly Monday ?

I wish I was having as much success here!
So I got the balancer off, but it has had it.
I then removed the four studs from the bottom of the timing cover and was able to get it to come off the block, then removed the top chain , guides and tensioner. One of the photos shows where the chain has been carving channels into a guide that had come apart.
I can't remove the lower chain as the sump is still on.
Unfortunately some bits have escaped and made their way into the sump.....
This car hates me.

I feel for you! It would appear the top chain was running far too loose; the “Tension” is adjustable via the eccentric cog arrangement. I would assume the “gouged out” bits of aluminium (gouged out by the top chain) are in the sump anyway, so perhaps the time has come to have it off (if you see what I mean!)
Sometimes the longest way ends up being the quickest.
Take a break for a day, and then come back at it refreshed. Good luck!

Aye, good advice.
I've managed to retrieve one of the wayward items thanks to a long magnet pickup device, but you do make a good point.
I'm really not sure how I can get the front suspension out with the car located where it is. Guess I'm going to have to figure it out.
I'm quite grumpy though about some of this. The upper guide that had come apart has obviously been apart for quite some time, and yet a mere week or two before the head gasket went I had had the car in at a classic Jag specialist very near to where I live who charged me eye watering sums to fix various things (only some of which were items I'd asked to be done), and apparently had looked at the timing chains as they were noisy. I say apparently, other things they charged me for have clearly not been done either.
Not naming names on a public forum though, too easy to get hit with a sueball.
It's been a rotten day weather wise out here where I live near Ealing...

What a dreadful day mate, sometimes the planets just align and that big boot comes straight at you and kicks you right in the **** !
I am hopefully getting a car trailer in the next week , so if you get stuck I will come and get the car and get it on the ramp here, just so you know there is always another option, either that or hit the whiskey !!!

I agree . . . very generous offer from TilleyJon. . . but, just as importantly, clearing the sump away, will turn a horrible job into a relative walk in the park.
Just one wee question once sump is off (not wanting to add to your burdens) . . . what was oil pressure like, especially hot idle? Nothing worse than buttoning up an engine rebuild to find that failing oil pressure could have been addressed while sump was off. Even a modest skim off the faces can work miracles in restoring pressure from a (commonly) worn XK oil pump.
Best wishes,
Ken

Yes, that might be the way to go! I'll have a chat to Jon about it. Not having a decent spot to work on the car is making everything just so much harder. I hadn't realised just how important that was going to be since all the previous work I've done myself was back in Australia, on big properties, with sheds... etc..
I've actually got the use of a car trailer whenever I want as a work colleague has one that he stores at my work, but the only vehicle I have access to with a towbar is a 2001MY Volvo V40, I think the poor little Volvo would split in half if I tried to use it to tow the Jag!
Back to the car though, hurrah for magnets on long sticks, I've retrieved an errant spacer tube from the sump. The only bit unaccounted for is the gauze filter for the tensioner.
In regards to oil pressure, I don't know. I could never get the oil pressure gauge to work. It's one of the things I'm trying to get fixed in this whole process. But I think I could probably safely assume given the way the rest of the job has gone that it will need doing. So I guess the sump has to come off....

Brent,
one way that I raise my S type is using two of the original jacks which I have, one on each side of the car.
It takes going from one side to the other cranking each jack up, (if you don't have a helper), but I can raise the bottom of the front tires at least 18 inches from the ground and maintain the car level. Then I add two heavy duty jacks and release the factory jacks slightly.
The idea for this would be to remove the front suspension, but I've done it for other reasons.
obviously you can't raise the car through the front member if you want to remove it.

someone told me that the oxidation they had on them, actually protected the aluminum all the time the car was abandoned in the Florida jungle.
those came from a 1964 3.8 engine in a 1964 S type, so I assume they were manufactured in 1963.
