excuse me for interrupting, but while on this theme,
what is the easiest way to replace the rubber gaiter?

Mine is melted like chewing gum. Have a new one from SNG.

thanks.

Just done some checking in the official parts book and it appears that there are two different part numbers for the lower columns of PAS cars (RHD). The part number of the '1st Type' steering box (Burman ?) is
C23605/4 and the part number for the '2nd Type (Marles ?) is C26431/4. It may be that those two lower columns are different lengths to each other. I'll be fitting my 'Burman' box next week so will then find out if
the lower column that I have will fit (fingers crossed). The one I have rebuilt is certainly shorter than the manual steering box lower column fitted at the moment.

There are 4 steering boxes fitted to an S Type over the years.

1) Manual
2) Burman First Type PAS ~ carry over from Mk2 ~ very early cars.
3) Burman Second Type PAS with torsion bar actuated quill valve. (most cars)
4) Marles Bendix Varamatic PAS (built by Adwest under licence in the UK from Bendix Corp) ~ marked HALE. (Very late cars approx a year after 420)

Jose.

You have to remove the lower shaft (much easier on LHD). Would be wise to replace the Nylon rollers in the plunging CV joint & regrease with a 3% Moly Grease. The 2 rollers are just held on with circlips. Try & save the gaiter clamps as they are no longer available & clean up nicely if not damaged. Take care removing.
