Default Legal requirement for data plate

Having looked at a number of posts recently it struck me there are a number of places where the data plate is fitted. Some it is below the starter solenoid and others it is on the inside of the engine bay. Is there any legal requirement where this must go as to me the obvious place would be on top of the heater assembly then everyone can read it easily.

I imagine that, as you can swop the heater this is not a good place for it , but is there any other requirements/places members know of?

By each individual country back before the middle 70's when World market started making it easier for manufacturers to place ID and VIN #s in a uniform place, including body and frame stamps.

In the UK you dont need a chassis plate for an MOT as long( As in case of mk2)the body/chassis no is actually stamped on body.
