I am currently fitting the exterior chromes to 1968 240. I have finished all but the central chrome going from the leaper to the windscreen end. The bonnet has 10 slots rather than just the holes on the other chrome finishers. The SNG Barratt fitting kit has 10 small “special” clips that would seem to be for the chrome strip but how are the clips attached? If you use the supplied rivets in the kit with washer I suspect the “nipple” created to hold all the other strips would push all the prongs of the “special” clips out of line or bent.
Do you maybe use the rivets but remove the washer to get a more flush rivet”

Just to add to that the chrome finishing kit is SBS1271FK and the individual “special” clips are BD9851.

Use the clips in the kit. That centre strip is slightly wider then the other strips on the car.

 

Thank you, I understand that but how are the clips fitted to the bonnet? Do you use the supplied rivets that create the “nipple” that is the correct size for the other chromes or are the clips fitted with different rivets or maybe even BA nuts and bolts?

Thank you. Makes much more sense. I didn’t get any nuts or bolts in my set, but it has to be the best way of doing it.
Glad I’ve not rivetted all the clips in place before asking the question. The perfect example of the values of the forum and the speed of replies.

Glyns car although spectacular in finish and condition is possibly in the worst colour possible to take any detail photos from. This is what Glyn was trying to show in more detail. The chrome strips are held in with the rivets with small washers underneath. When fitting add a little sealant on the underside between the washer and the bonnet as I didn't at first and found if I parked the car out in the rain I was getting an engine valley full of water sat around the plugs making it difficult to start the car without drying the valley out with paper towels first.
The small piece of chrome from the leaper to the front is held on with a small threaded "T" piece which has a nut that holds it in place on the leading edge.
The side chromes have a butter fly type clip with folding wings that are bent over on the underside.
Please see the photos attached. Having looked at the photos myself I can see I really need to get under the bonnet and do some touch ups on the paint work.

Ive got a bunch of BA nuts, bolts and washers all set for tomorrow, but from what you say it should be done with the supplied rivets with the washers on.
Just to be clear is that rivet gun on the outside top surface, with the head of the rivet pushed through the small clip and then through the bonnet or done from below, inside to out?
I had planned to do all this with the bonnet on the car but that could be a challenge.
I might try the nut & bolt method first? You can see with it being a slot rather than a tight hole for a rivet that water ingress is definitely going to be an issue and as you say all the water will go straight down the top of the engine.

Mine were riveted from the outside with the washer going over the end of the rivet that expands which is on the underside.
Whether you use rivets or nuts and bolts sealing the slots is imperative to stop rain getting in.

You need a riveter with a small shank that goes inside the rivet to pull it tight.
