Default looking for chassis or frame number on Mk2

Hi,
Ive had this old Jag for a long time. It was my regular car for years.
I put it in my garage quite a few years ago, now i want to get it going again.
But i couldnt find the log book.
Ive been searching for weeks.

So, i thought i'd apply for a replacement log book.

The form is pretty straightforward, ive got all the answers, except one.

They want the " VIN, chassis or frame number "
if you do not give this information it will be returned to you.

I'm pretty sure they mean "or they'll send the form back"

Theres a little note under this question - in brackets:
(usually shown on a plate near the engine)

Well its a 1962 model, so i dont think it would have a VIN number.
Ive had a look around the bulkhead area, and i found some numbers
on a plate by the bonnet hinge area, drivers left.

theres a 17 digit box slot on the form for this number,
and i dont think the numbers ive found are what they want.

I'm hoping someone will be able to direct me to the usual places
where a "chassis or frame number" could be found,
and hopefully the typical letters and numbers arrangement,
so that if i find such a number i could put it forward.

these are the numbers on a plate by the bonnet hinge:

CAR No ------ 209171DN
BODY No ------ SO21731
GEARBOX No ------ GBN 65992JS
ENGINE No ------ LO3860

Valve inlet clearance 004

.............

they put the inlet presumably in thou's
but i couldnt see anything for exhaust.

I will be going over places carefully looking for a chassis or frame number,
but if its all dirty and painted over, i may need to be looking in the right
place, cos it might be hard to find.

Hi,

i see that "XKRacer" has posted that its in the boot,
for the XK models,
probably not for the Mark 2 saloons.


If it might be in the boot for some Mk2's
i would look there,
but theres a lot of bits and pieces piled up around the back end,

So i'll see what others say before moving loads of stuff.

IDENTIFICATION
JAGUAR MK 2 Identification numbers are stamped on a plate in the engine compartment, attached to the right-hand inner wing. These numbers are repeated elsewhere, as shown below. I have seen some cars where the plate has been moved to the centre of the firewall/scuttle like an S Type. Not sure they ever came from the factory like that.



The VIN number (in modern speak) is 209171DN ~ the DN means yours is a manual fitted with Laycock de Normanville overdrive.

The serial number sequences are: RHD ~ LHD
2.4 100001– 121768 ~ 125001– 128405
3.4 150001– 172095 ~ 175001– 181571
3.8 200001– 210000 ~ 210001– 224758
3,8 230001– 235383

The suffixes decode as follows:

BW Borg Warner automatic gearbox ~ DN Laycock de Normanville overdrive.
Cars fitted with power-assisted steering have a P prefix; for example, P 202389 BW.

Other than a plate the VIN is stamped into the bonnet catch channel, just ahead of the radiator header tank. RHS



Engine Number The engine number is stamped on the right-hand side of the cylinder block above the oil filter and again at the front of the cylinder head casting, beside the front spark plug hole on the back of the chain case.

A typical engine number would be KG 5320/ 8.
This breaks down into three elements:
KG Engine type identifier (see below) 5320 Serial number /8 Compression ratio
/8 for 8: 1 CR
/7 for 7: 1 CR
/9 for 9: 1 CR

The type identifiers are:

BG, BH and BJ 2.4-litre engines
KG, KH and KJ 3.4-litre engines
LA, LB, LC and LE 3.8-litre engines


Gearbox Number On all manual gearboxes, the gearbox number is stamped on a small shoulder at the left-hand rear corner of the gearbox casing, and on the top cover around the rim of the core plug aperture. On automatic gearboxes, the number is stamped on a plate attached to the left-hand side of the gearbox casing.

Thanks for your reply.
I shall put the 8 digit DN number in the place provided on the form.
At 209171 DN it is a 3.8L engine, so that seems right enough.

I will be very relieved to get that form in the post.

Getting to the bonnet catch area is difficult at the moment,
but i will double check as soon as poss.

BTW ~ Cold inlet valve clearance is usually 4 thou & exhaust 6 thou. Certainly on 3.8's. ~ sorry I'm a 3.8 S Type man but have a lot of Jag data stored.

Remember the "P" if your car has power steering.

Yes it is odd but I have no answer for that.

Rob ~ I see you viewing below. Any ideas on missing exhaust clearance?

From what you put, maybe its

LC3860

The plate is quite grubby,
its likely that i read an "O" where I should have seen "C"

I'll check again sometime today (its half past four here, afternoon)

maybe i could make it a bit smaller somehow.

anyway,
as you can see, my garage has become a sort of overspill
for bits and pieces from the house.
i'm gonna have to get shot of most of it.

so the old jag is in there somewhere.

well, now that i know its a 'C' it looks like a 'C'
before, it looked like an 'O'

I have refrained from rubbing that little plate with any kind of cleaner,
cos its bad enough, i dont want to chance making it worse !!
Actually, its fairly legible, it looks worse in the pictures.

Is there a way to make these pics smaller ?

It looks quite tarnished, for some reason it looks a lot worse than it is. Most of it is quite legible.

The chassis plates are fairly resistant. It should respond well to an oily rag.

The original etched chassis plates were quite robust. The new screened variety are junk & fall apart.

Hello John, you're going to have a nice place to work when you get rid of all that stuff.
Too good to throw away, but too useless to use.
My Dad was the same way with our basement, it got to the point where he could barely get around down there.

Hi Jeff,

yes you're quite right. Too much stuff. Mostly no use at all.
I'm gonna start getting rid. I need that space.

(The SORN form)

As to the Jag, ive been trying to do the DVLC's form,
unsuccessfully so far.

from what i can see, one has to download it from their site,
then fill it in, and include it with the V62.

This form is not available at the post office,
they tell me i have to get it directly from DVLC.

I have a couple of printers, haven't used them for a while,
now neither of them work, the heads seem to be the problem,
they've dried up.

I'm pretty sure i've got an electrostatic one somewhere,
they use black dust for ink, that should be OK, if not
i'll have to see if they (DVLC) will send me a form.

Its all good fun,

I think a garage clearout is needed. I hope you find your Mark 2 under all that lot ! When working on old Jaguars I like to have plenty of room around the car. You'll probably end up doing a rebuild !
