hi Mike,
congratulations on rescuing the MK2. I'll send you the mechanic's info.

the engine can be removed complete with transmission from the top or from the bottom.
if removing it from the bottom of the car, the front suspension member needs to be removed first.

have you tried removing the radiator and fan, then using a large socket and a large cheater bar on the front crankshaft damper nut ? (you should only try to turn the engine clockwise).

Hi Jose,
Many thanks for your reply and the contact details.
I tried the cheater bar on the front pulley, but no movement(other than tightening the nut a little), so its really tight. I put some more diesel fuel down the bores to help free the rings but I already started to strip the parts from the engine to take it out. I have a lift crane so Im going to take it out through the top, with the transmission still attached. I'll keep you updated with progress, (any further advice will be welcome).
