Default Mk2 rear diff pumpkin color

I thought I had resolution to this question a few years back, but some recent encounters have caused me to wonder once again. Clearly the diff casing, perhaps not the rear cover, had a red oxide or Glyptol coating or finish. The question is, was the diff casing then painted black? Or was it left the reddish-orange color?

Thoughts and opinions welcome, but I would really like conclusive facts :-).

Thanks,
Lin

Hi Lin

The red color is something like the rest of a layer of the casting. The Diff was painted black, but the black colour did not hold long.

Regards,
Oliver

Thanks to Oliver for his response. I also heard from a number of others and apparently the diff was painted black. I sure am happy to hear this news since I had already painted mine black!
