Peter ~ as I say who knows. I don't see the management at Daimler much since retirement other than Jürgen Schrempp who can't leave SA alone & spends time here ~ still owns a house here. He & I were/are good buddies. Known him since he was Technical Director of MBSA in his youth. He is now long retired from all his board positions after standing down as CEO. The last time I made contact with Dieter Zetsche was to wish him well on his retirement. Have never met Ola. OEM's fell under my purview in my global job.

The only Daimler sold in the US was the Daimler Dart. It was not sold as a Daimler though and was simply marketed as the Dart or SP250. Interestingly though there was a "Daimler" service division under Jaguar and we hold many of the bulletins and letters. It is our understanding that MB held the name in the US and therefore Jaguar could not use it and since they were not going to market the line it was not worth the fight. ON a side note when Jaguar did enter the US market officially after WW2 they found out the name Jaguar was held by a gentleman who did import SS cars and later SS Jaguar prior to the war. Lyons sought the help of the Studebaker Company (very friendly with each other) and the issue was quickly resolved. All of this is covered very well in "Jaguars in America" by Dougdale and later version edited by Cook.

Glyn - that's all very senior. I met only engineers and so long ago, they'd be old men now. My professional work moved away from engines and combustion forty years ago ... . They were technically, very good and OK to work with.
Until, we got into this, I knew nothing of the Daimler Manufacturing Company of the USA (except that something existed roughly equivalent to the one in Coventry). According to Wiki, it went through various owners, including Steinway Pianos and the General Electric Company, before it passed entirely into the hands of Daimler in Germany. The business folded in 1913. As the German company was the last owner of a producer of Daimler cars in the USA, it seems likely that Daimler AG may have predominant rights to the trade mark there as some of you have said.
The Daimler Dart - it had a nice engine and was ugly to the point of becoming almost attractive (if that makes sense). It also fell into the name trap and became the SP250 because Chrysler had their Dodge Dart.
