I find that the so called expert who give the estimated value don't have a clue of the actual value. I often wonder if they even look at the pictures of the car.
I have just looked at the photos on the Bonham page. Bonham are known for pricing cars higher than they are actually worth. The photos are not very good and there are not enough of them so you would have to buy it sight unseen with those photos. They show nothing of the body condition although the paint work does look good from the boot angle. The chrome looks poor and the interior I would guess is not original verging on the obscene with that two tone colour. Never seen that before. The engine number 10730 suggests it was one of the very last S Types to come off the production line and it is dated as registered 27th June 1968. It is a 3.4 with steel wheels. mileage shows 8000 but that is possibly 108000 or it has been clocked. Being a 1968 it will have the Adwest PAS system and the BW35 auto box, all good. Although the PAS is leaking (try finding one that does not) they are easily rebuilt compared to the Burmans and mine having been rebuilt does not leak. The condition I would say is fair so the guide price of £10 to £12k is reasonable but you would really need to see the car close up to judge the actual condition of the body work. I would have said £7 to £10k would have been more accurate but then it is a Bonham auction.

Hi Rishi,
Here is a 420 for sale in Kentucky USA. It’s been for sale for several months. It’s asking price started at $15,500 USD and now sits at $10,500. My guess is it will sell for around $8,000. Use this as another

That would cost you $6000 in South Africa on a good day.

As they say in real estate, it's all about location, location, location.

This one has just popped up on the market. Looks interesting. Will have a look next Friday.
It is a 1964 MOD so has the Moss box.
It has a completely overhauled engine and IRS.
Wood and interior trim is in great condition.
Chrome is a bit pitted, no visible rust.
Wire wheels are new.

Door fit tells you it's an early car when the dies were new. Do you really want an awful Moss Box though? The wire wheels do not look new!!

Or they are filthy dirty.

For a quick clean these brushes help clean a wire wheel. To do the job properly one needs to dismount the wheel. clean the hub & rim inside and out & polish, and then clean & polish each spoke & nipple individually. Pressure washers can help but will never achieve a show quality wheel.

This is my car. I don't consider this wheel clean enough for a show. It has brake dust on it and other minor debris. (excuse the black & white. My neighbour was taking arty shots of the car for an article she was publishing)

This was taken when the IRS was overhauled. Looks like standard hubs at this point so I think the conversion to wires is quite recent.

That must be a pre shot ~ No sane person would not repaint or powder coat while apart. As I've said before it's a big job and shimming the splined hubs is a PITA.

Excuse dust! Pre final sorting of pipework.

Hub carriers cleaned with our bulk truck Aluminium product.

Pipework done: No more zip ties.

The wires must have been recently fitted but they are either filthy dirty or used/second hand.

I run a dry spray-on lubricant on my splines made by Carl Bechem in Germany. If it can stay on a motorcycle chain for the whole of the Roof of Africa Rally then splines are a walk in the park. Grease just makes a mess with typical Jaguar incontinence. Runs down spokes.

BTW ~ The diff casing is supposed to be painted dull red and the calipers yellow Cadmium plated. Those calipers seem to be aftermarket.

I checked out the chassis number with a decoder and found out that this 3.8 S MOD LHD is actually a 3.4 S MOD RHD.
So it has had an engine transplant and has been converted to LHD.
I was triggered by a foto of the motor which is the wrong colour for a 3.8 but is stamped as a 3.8.

This makes me a bit concerned that maybe this is a cobbled together car.

I have access to the S Type register with all the known/reported S Type Jaguars in chassis order and separated in to LHD/RHD then 3.8 and 3.4. If you post the VIN number I can check what the car was or is and might even have a bit of history on the car for you. Give me the chassis number and engine number if you have them please.
If you can give me the numbers on the vin plate on the bulk head and then the individual numbers stamped into the side of the engine and the number on the slam panel.

Location of engine number. S Type engine should start with 7B

Location of chassis number on slam panel. Either stamped in or could be scratched on by hand with an engraver.

Thanks. What I have now is 1B2102DN. It has an original power steering so I guess it’s prefixed with a P
