Onine Chassis Decoder

Online VIN Decoder for MK-2, S type, Daimler
find out when your MK-2 or S type was REALLY built:
Saloon Chassis Number Decoder - Jaguar Mk2 Restoration
turns out my 1965 S type was Car Number 282 of 2036 S type built in 1964.
my S type was originally exported to California where it lived all its life until I bought it. California required that an aluminum Tag was bolted to the firewall / bulkhead denoting the year of manufacture, which corresponded to the info provided by the above Decoder.
the picture below shows the Tag in my car's bulkhead which reads: " J/64 "

FYI, that link is no longer good, but that site seems to be at https://krissmotors.com/Mk2/?page_id=11749. I just used it for mine.

Says my car was built in 1966 (possible ~ Jan '66). Says my car has manual steering which is wrong due to South African A & B prefixes. (P never used. They were either A1B or B1B)
A prefix cars were built at CDA, East London ~ now our state of the art Benz plant built on that site.
B prefix cars were built at Blackheath, Cape Town ~ Now our Land Rover etc, plant.
All SA built S Types were 3.8 & all had Power Steering.
My car is A1B 56966 DN

Doesn't give a lot of information and nothing new other than the build number sequence for the car. States mine was 600th out of 708 UK built in 1967 but according to the Jaguar figures there were 1008 S Type Jaguars built in 1967. So do the Jaguar figures cover the CKD SA builds as well? If your chassis number Glyn, albeit wrong, comes up on the checker one one assume the CKD chassis numbers are included. So whose figures are correct. 708 or 1008 S types produced in 1967.

Problem is Jerry that the information is only good if it is correct. I could tell you from the information you have supplied that your car had stone wheels and was built in 1935 but it would not be correct.
You are better off getting a Heritage certificate as this is complied from the official Jaguar and Daimler records. Only problem is they cost £50 plus postage where as the inaccurate information is free.

Tried it for my Mk2. The only new thing that it told me was that my car was 2958 out of 3540 manufactured in 1962 in the UK. According to the heritage certificate, its date of manufacture is 1 November 1962 so the 2958 (out of 3540) sounds reasonable. It doesn't say what the 3540 are; I'm assuming it's RHD 3.4 Mk2 or RHD and MOD or ... ? Thorley lists a production of 4,660 3.4 Mk2 in 1962.
