Just purchased a complete 4HA axle with a 3.77 Power-Loc diff. That's the good news. The bad news is it has been sitting for a while and of course the is some rust where parts were out of the oil. I am replacing a stump pulling 4.55 open diff currently on our 1960 MK2 with a 3.8L 4-sp OD drive train.
I have the diff all apart and the ring and pinion gears are ok, only very minor surface rust on a few teeth on the ring gear which came right off. NO pitting. wear pattern looks great an we think this was a low mile car it came off. The clutch packs show now wear again pointing to low usage.
The issue is the 4 gears that I will call spider gears. The parts book call them "Gear differential Pinion Mate" Part # 7685 All 4 of them have medium to badly pitted teeth, about 2 to 4 on each piece. The only source I have found is SNG Barratt (which correctly references the part number) at 80 plus pounds each and special order! Ouch!
I have been advised to NOT use the 4 gears but to find replacements. Look at the photos and any opinions?
The Power-Loc carrier has stamped on it wwww 44 STD NA1 C 30761. We believe the last sequence is the date made, March 7, 1961. Of interest is the 44 number. Is this really a DANA 44 which might open up other ways to locate the gears, maybe even used. Jeeps of the era also used similar axles I told.
Any comments or guidance here?
The axles are 19 splines as they fit in the carrier.

The Dana 44 is loosely based on this differential. Some parts interchange, many do not, or only with modifications. The good news is those gears are the same as used up to the later XJS to 1996, and Series 1, 2 and 3 XJ6/12 cars. However, you need the ones from a power-loc car, the open differentials have different gears.
For the USA market, than means V12 XJS is probably a good donor. USA market Series 3 XJ6 cars were all open differential, that wasn't the case in other markets. Good used gears should work fine, either try some of the big jag parts places like Jaguar heaven or a specialized breaker like David Bodger at everyday XJ. https://everydayxj.com/ He's a great guy and could probably find you something. If not Alan Slawson is the go to guy in the UK for these diffs, he has had parts remanufactured that were unavailable. Axle & Differential Overhauls
As a side note, you will need the special clamshell type puller to remove the bearings. They need to come on and off a few times to adjust the shim underneath, and you must use the special puller to get them off without damaging the bearing. Ask me how I know...
You certainly can't put those spider gears back (or bearings). Dana might well have an equivalent spare but hopefully someone here knows the answer otherwise you would have to send one to Dana or an agent for comparison & measurement.

Yes I am aware of the clamshell puller. As you can see the carrier bearings need replaced.

Hello, Go see Roger over at Thourobred Motors on 301 north of Sarasota. Ask him for the Power-Lok differential that is painted mettallic green from Larry Louton from his Mark 10. It has all the new parts that you want, Shims, Discs and gears. Sorry about what he is got to have for it. At least you won't have to drive all over the internet to get it.
