Thank you both - that's a great help. I've fitted a Burman steering box so, as shown by Glyn, will be routing the return hose around the back of the subframe. The Marles Adwest is a different beast.
The Adwest pipe work is only shown as a comparison and for Glyn's attention as I know he likes to collect these photos for future reference.
Good Afternoon (or Evening/Morning, depending where you are),
Pleased to report that the Burman power steering system is now installed and working perfectly. As previously posted I have fitted a C42 dynamo (new bearings/brushes) and an original pump. I did have a problem, as previously reported, with the high pressure hose supplied by David Manners - that was resolved by them very quickly via their supplier I'm pleased to say (wrong connector length at pump end). In the past I've heard various criticisms of David Manners (DMG) but I've always found them courteous, efficient and quick with sorting out problems. I've no doubt that they have been instrumental in keeping hundreds, if not thousands, of our cars on the road and we should all be grateful for their service (No, I'm not paid or employed by them - lol !). I'll have to wait and see how the dynamo performs as to whether I eventually fit an alternator in place of the dynamo - I'm not going to be using the car at night so I feel confident that the system should be able to cope (fingers crossed).
Thank you to everyone for your kind advice and suggestions - like most, I constantly complain about the internet and it's impingement on our day to day life but this forum is a fantastic source of help.
That is a second type Burman box with the torsion bar quill valve.
They can be rebuilt. Had mine rebuilt by Summit Steerings in SA. I would hand it over to a pro that has experience with that box. It can be a real fiddle. They also recognise the wear parts that make them non viable to rebuild. In my case they built me one good box out of 2.
Be very careful with the input shaft seal. Frequently damaged on the splines & causes a slow fluid drip.
Looking for a good used/rebuildable box like this. the one I have has apparently ate some ***** and is unrebuildable
Thanks

The recirculation cage has probably come loose somehow and the ***** are rattling around inside the housing.
If this did happen, they're probably jamming things up and going places where they shouldn't.
I would really like to get in there and see what the internals look like.
When I rebuilt mine, the top bushing was so worn that high pressure oil was getting into the wrong chamber and causing a build up of internal pressure _ so much so it was smoking.
Yeah, I havent seen it. This is coming from the rebuilder
That description from the rebuilder would indicate that it had some sort of catastrophic failure _ I'm assuming.
Are you able to have him explain specifically what he means by "ate some ***** and is un-rebuildable" ?
If possible I would get the guy to show you what exactly is wrong.
If the box was healthy, were able to turn the drop arm from lock to lock when it was out of the car, did it "jam" through it's full Lock to Lock travel ?
Are there any rattling sounds coming from the box ?
It's a complex box for someone who doesn't know what they're doing, I would question the mechanic (or machinist) who says it can't be rebuilt.
Looks like it crunched up some of the ball bearings
Im striking out on finding a LHD box for parts but have found some RHD boxes. Anybody care to venture whether the worm might be the same between LHD and RHD boxes?
