If you can get a website address I will contact them.
.
I thought about trying to find an Adwest box but having to modify the front member gets too complicated in many ways.

Get a front end from a 420 - apparently it is a straight bolt on - and it will have the adwest box.

No website. Too busy to need one. They are highly regarded as you can see on Google.

Be warned that some of these boxes can't be rebuilt dependent on condition & wear. They require stripping & examination to establish that. In my case they built me one good box out of two.

Jose are you sure the subframe has to be modified? I think the modification only happens when you go from a small NON PAS steering box which does not require the dip to a PAS steering box that being bigger requires the dip to sit in. The difference between a Burman and an Adwest should not change the size of the dip. My S Type is a September 67 build so one of the first to be fitted with the Adwest and I can't think Jaguar would have changed the design of the Subframe to allow it to fit so late in the day.

The dip in the subframe for the PAS steering box.

Cass I don't even know what box my car has.

I have assumed it is the Burman since the car was built in late 1964 as a 1965 model.

All I know is that it is leaking power steering fluid. The car has the factory power assist system attached to the generator.
Though it is a slow leak, it is a leak.

I may have a source for used Burman or Adwest boxes. ( Left hand drive boxes ). Also for a 420 front member, but my goodness it is a "remanufacture" and I still have the engine to deal with.

I thought it was a simple matter of removing the box and having it resealed, but no, I have to remanufacture the car!

Jose, your should be the Burman type 2. These are photos of the Burman (Type 1 and 2 look the same) and the Adwest. If you look down the side of the engine in your case the exhaust side at the top of the steering box the Burman has a ring of six bolts, the round top is in cast metal and the hydraulic line comes out of the top. The Adwest on the other hand has four bolts on a square aluminium top without the hydraulic hose.

Burman box

Marles Adwest box
The other thing I would contemplate Jose is if you have access to a Jaguar 420 front subframe with the Adwest steering box and brakes attached take it. Straight swap with the S Type subframe. The Adwest will run the same lines with a small tweak from the PAS pump on the S Type so no need for major alterations. The brakes will be the upgraded three pot callipers so better braking. To swap the subframes over you are only looking at half a dozen bolts, lift the body up and the whole lot will wheel out from under the car on its own wheels. Very straightforward and would be done in four hours with a meal break. Before installing it all I would refurbish all the bushes and the replace the Adwest seals but they are very easy to do compared to the Burman. I replaced my Adwest seals in two hours on the patio table in the back garden on a sunny day. No special tool needed but get hold of a 420 workshop manual as the Adwest is not covered in the S Type manual. I have an copy of it so I will send one to your email address. The seal kit you can buy from SNG.

This is a Type 1 Burman box with the short jumper pipe.

I have been told that the Varamatic Xmember dimple is deeper. Don't know the veracity of that statement ~ guess we should check the P/N

Varamatic.

my source told me he has 420 front members but no Adwest Varamatic boxes since everybody is buying those.

guys I found a Varamatiic but he wants $450.00 Dollars and it is a "rebuildable core".

I think that is way too much considering it needs to be rebuilt.

Rebuild can be done on your kitchen table with a $20 seal kit. Not many parts to wear out and fully adjustable compared to the Burman. $450 for the unit is up to the buyer to accept if this is reasonable or not. If you were to sell your original unit how much would you expect to get then deduct that from the $450.

Does that figure include the idler unit and drop arm and the bits and pieces that join the steering drop arm up to the idler unit?

Yes ~ The Varamatic is a robust simple design with little to give trouble, adjustable & the best of the bunch for steering feel & response.

Having checked the parts manual it is apparent that the only cars which require the 'dip' in the subframe are those fitted with the Variomatic (Marles) steering box. Those fitted with the Burman box AND those with a manual
steering box do not require a dip (If I'm wrong on that score I'll find out the hard way next week when I attempt to fit my rebuilt Burman box to my non-pas car !!) I'll report back.

I think you might be wrong. The Part numbers for the cross members are;

C15353 Manual R and LHD
C26433 Burman PAS RHD
C26599 Adwest PAS RHD

I would guess from this that the dip is essential when going from a standard steering box to the larger PAS System and there is a slight tweak in the size of the dip for the Adwest. Having said that there is no reason a competent mechanic with good welding skills could not make the dip in a standard crossmember to allow the PAS to fit but you would need the crossmember off the car to do that.

This is all very confusing. The part number C26433 you quote doesn't appear in my MK2 parts manual (printed 1972). It does show, however, in the S Type manual. There are only two part numbers listed for Right Hand
Drive MK2 cars - that being C15353 (LHD cars with PAS and all manual cars including RHD) and C26599 (RHD cars with Varamatic Power Assisted Steering). On that basis I'm presuming that the Burman PAS box
does not require the cut-out. If my assumption is wrong I'll find out the hard way next week - lol !

I understand the Burman type 1 or type 2 do not require the dimple mod to the front member, only the Varamatic.

That might be where I am going wrong then as I have an S Type. To be truth full I have never seen a Burman in situ so don't really know if it requires the dip so will be very interested when you try and assemble it all.
