S-type 3.8 1966, "drive shaft and flange" worn, looking for replacement
Hello!
I´m in the process of fixing up a 1966 S3.8 for trip this summer. What started as a "minimum effort" rebuild has avalanched completely and the front and rear suspension is disassembled, cleaned, painted and all bushings and bearings replaced. Brakes is upgraded to ventilated front and rear...
We pulled the output shafts from the differential and noticed that the splines on the left driveshaft was badly worn. Half of the thicknes of the splines was gone!
Is this a common problem? the right side looks good, I suspect the driveshaft wasn´t hardened properly
I have been looking at sngbarrat for a new driveshaft but they list it as no longer available. Ebay searches didn´t find any either.
Àny help in finding a replacement or tips how to repair it is very welcome. I would rather not weld on material and the machine new splines, it could be possible but then it would probably need to be hardened again.. lot of work with potential screw ups.

I will see if I can find a wrecker in UK, I order most of my parts from UK since it is much cheaper than Sweden.

Yep, living in Sweden. Probably not any specialist jaguar wreckers, not common in Sweden with specialist wreckers for classic cars. Not enough classic cars to wreck if it isn´t a volvo..

Thanks for all the replies! I will try to get some measurements or get hold of a XJ6 outputshaft to compare.
Is anyone keen on disassemble thier diff just to take a look?

Try contacting the guy from eBay to see if he can give you the dimensions for the XJS ones he has, the same part fits the e-type etc, and the Salisbury HU axle was a very common unit, so there is a good chance it will be the same across all makes/models, the drive shafts would be different as Fraser says IMO.

The guys in the first post I put re eBay sale are Simply Performance Jaguar Specialists, family run business, I am sure if you call them they will help and confirm if the XJS/XJ6 E-Type Salisbury re diff is the same as the S-type/420, their number is +44 (0) 1306 711134 , then you will know if either those or the diff in Hopersimpsons post will an option.

If you need more information on the shafts that are on our eBay shop let me know.
I am happy to give you all the dimensions that you need. I think they may be different as the earlier shafts changed. We should have some early shafts in stock if the ones we have on eBay do not fit.
Thanks,
Ben from Simply Performance

Worth an email to Alan Slawson at AJS Engineering. I reckon. Alan rebuilt my Powr-Lok diff last year and had to replace one of the output shafts with a good used one from his stock.
He might or might not be willing to part with one as his stock must depleting, but I'm sure he'd give you some info on commonality if you can supply the diff serial number.

Good Luck!
