S-type 3.8 1966, "drive shaft and flange" worn, looking for replacement
#21
The problem I am having is the diff drive shafts that I have on eBay need to be dismantled to find the dimensions. Because they are on eBay I cannot do this.
I found a shaft from an early series 1 XJ but the shaft was very different!
I will keep looking, I am sure we will have it.
Regards,
Ben

I sent an email to Alan Slawson on AJS Engineering and asked him if he knew the difference between the output shafts.
This is the answer I got:
Hi Karl ,
You shaft is from a 4.2litre circa 1964/5 to about 1967/8
The look the same as the Xj6 version but are in fact different. The threaded portion is in a different position.
If you get one from a 420/S Type or a MK10 they will fit.
Regards
Alan
He was a bit puzzled when I said that I got a S3.8 from 1966 because the 4.2 came in 64/65. I don´t know what is correct and perhaps it is of little importance when dealing with the differential?
There should be a difference on the location of the threads between the s-type and the XJ6.
Ben, perhaps you can measure this and compare with my pictures without disassembling the output shafts?

Hi Karl,
Sorry for the slow pick up this end we have been very busy.
I am learning more and more here. It would appear there are many differences with the output shafts. I have 3 which are all different.
I am still looking for one that matches dimensions but I have a feeling because its a very early diff it may be quite difficult to source. We have them in differentials but trying to get one off the shelf.
Leave it with me I will keep working on it.
Regards,
Ben

Another question: the s-type never got the 4.2 liter engine?

No it didn't, but the 420 did. This car is based on the S-type, and was a stop-gap effort to cover the time lag before the XJ saloon came along. Jaguar saloons were getting a bit long-in-the-tooth style-wise and sales were not good, so Sir William Lyons ordered the 420 to be developed quickly. The body engineers at Pressed Steel said they couldn't do it, but did manage to get the body shells into production very quickly; far quicker than normal. This huge effort for a limited production car may seem strange today, but Sir William Lyons was used to getting things done quickly right from the early 30s.
