Default Speedometer problem

Recently had fitted a new cable as the speedo stopped working - after having driven it for 50 or so miles there was an almighty juddering on the speedo itself and the needle was all over the place. Took it out at the weekend and noticed that the cable had not been screwed all the way in on the seating. However now the needle does not zero and when driving the needle goes all the way round to the stop pin and wavers. Is this a problem with the cable being kinked or had the speedo itself got a problem?

what car is it?

the transmission has a gear and adapter where the cable is also connected to. Check it by getting under the car and removing the adapter and gear to see if the gears are broken.

another possible scenario is a kinked speedo cable, the routing from the transmission to the speedometer has to be very smooth, as straight as possible, no sharp turns or bends.

When you say it goes all the way round to the stop pin and waivers do you mean it's hitting the max speed stop at all speeds ?

If that is the case it's is most likely to be damage to the speed cup/magnet area inside the speedo.

If the cable was loose there may be some debris inside the cable entry from wear which is causing the problem.

Something I saw on our Morris Minor is that grease made its way up the speedo cable and essentially turned the magnet/cup into a torque converter.

A disassembly, clean out all the grease and reassembly fixed it.

Welcome to the forum Fernando Enrique,

Your profile shows you have a 2002 X-Type. Do you also have a 1955-1967 MK1/MKII which are the models under discussion in this thread?
