The first videos in a new series all about the SU carburettor. This is a basic overview of the SU and a look at the various parts. The carb in the video is off a 1966 Mk2 3.8
SU carbs are not unique to Jaguar and the most common use were the Datsun Z cars and the foremost leader in providing rebuilding, enhancements, upgrades to SU carbs is Z Therapy, They make ball bearing throttle body shafts, all parts are replated, they machine polish rather than bead blasting, and they make their own nozzles with higher tolerances than stock. You do not need to only go with a Jag company and so many Datsun tuners are experts on SU's given the larger amount of Z cars with SU's.
I have had "renewing" of the carbs on my list. I had decided that over the winter layup I would work around the car trying to plug some of the more aggressive leaks. I removed the starting carb when I finally (!) determined that there was a fuel leak there TOO. Previously I had thought that it was just running down from a leak at the fuel bowl which I had been wrestling with already. Down in the supply tube were chunks of stuff. That made me decide to take them off and do The Thing. I got the kits last spring and have had them waiting on my workbench. Watching that vid was a good boost to my morale. I found a rusted off spring inside the front carb and both of the accel levers stuck beyond movement. I have soaked both overnight and things are looking much better. The front carb had these chunks in it and the spring on the diaphragm was rusted in half. Shocked that the car would run. Rear carb was filthy inside and outside but didnt have the boulders.
