Default Transmission stuck

I love this place and the great help.

I have a 1965 Jaguar 3.8s that has been sitting far to long.
I tried to move it today so I could get it worked on, but the transmission is stuck in park and I cannot budge the car.

W-2’d inside the shifting lever case inside the car with no success.

suggestions please.

Have you tried rocking the car backward/forwards while some tries to take it out of park? Sometime s the parking pawl can get a bit stuck, especially if the car is parked on a slight slope.

yes, the Park pawl can get stuck, pushing or pulling the car forward helps you shift it out of Park.

Are you sure its the selector that's stuck & not brakes or can you achieve no movement of the selector?

I did have someone rock the vehicle while I tried to shift.
There is a bit of play in the shift, but not much and I am confident that it is what is jammed.

the brake peddle was all the way to the floor, and I retracted it, so this is an additional challenge, but I do feel the selector is the first problem.

My dear friends, many thanks.
I rocked the car again this evening was able to get the shift working.

However, the car will still not move, so we are on to stuck brakes.

When I got in the vehicle, the brake peddle was depressed all the way to the floor. I retracted it, but it easily presses to the floor and remains.

I have not driven this vehicle for many years.

Advice on how to free up the brakes would be a gift.

Thank you all so very much.

Brakes can be stuck on for a couple of reasons. If the pedal is to the floor I would suspect it is a stuck master cylinder piston. With the piston stuck in the down position there is going to be a constant pressure on the fluid making the brakes stay on. The second possibility is that the caliper cylinder pistons are all stuck down due to the hydraulic pressure and corrosion. If the pistons have been out of the cylinders for a period of time they might have corrosion around the exposed piston stopping them from contracting back into the cylinders. This might account for one or two but not unless it has been a long time all four.
First thing I would do is release the hydraulic pressure by loosening the brake pipes running from the master cylinder. If this does not free it up then jack the car up and check which of the brakes is still locked on. Release the brake pipes or the bleed nipple on each of the seized calipers. Be careful not to snap off the bleed nipples as these are prone to rust and very weak being hollow. They can easily snap. Lots of penetrating fluid on the bleed nipples and pistons and rocking of the car back and forth should release each one that is stuck.
It sounds like you need a full brake rebuild starting with the master cylinder and then working out replacing the parts that are faulty with at least a new seal kit on each caliper and new brake fluid.

Just to add to Cass' wise advice. Pads can actually rust to the discs/rotors.

Good luck!
