I have a Daimler V8 2 1/2 litre from 1963 and recently repaired my master cylinder. Like you after removing the two nuts holding the master cylinder in place, it was loose but met resistance getting it out. So, I removed the driver's seat, six bolts, in order to get easier access under the steering wheel, then I undid the single nut that held the brake pedal in place, and then the seven nuts holding the brake assembly in place. Withdrew the assembly and now you have the master cylinder dust cover in sight. This is the swine causing all the trouble. I cut mine off since a new one was included in the repair kit. In truth , the biggest problem was re-fitting the seat! Be certain to order the gasket that seals the assembly to the body/bulkhead area. AlecG.

Love it just one of those half hour jobs that end up with half the car dismantled to get to the one bolt you need to undo.
The other one I hate is over the weekend I needed to drill a hole for the wife. Five minute job she says. Pulled the drill out I had not used for a year or so and the bloody thing does not work. Spent the next two hours stripping the thing to pieces to clean the contacts in the switch to get it going.
