Default Wanted Webasto sunroof kit for MK2

We just joined the forum and are about to purchase a MK2. We want to install a folding sunroof like they originally were fitted.

Some research say Webasto made kits but searching it seem they are out of business as the link in the page below is not found

https://www.tudorwebastosunroofs.com/

Can anyone help us search out a kit or even a used one from a parts car.

Or is there an alternative folding sunroof for the MK2?

Thanks

Are you looking for the large folding Vinyl Webasto roof or their much smaller metal panel OE roof?

Looking for the large folding Vinyl. The OEM metal units required I believe an entirely different roof especially on the inside. I have and old BMW with the Golde sunroof and the internal tracks are all wedeled into the inside of the roof.

With what little info I found thus far for the folding roof, I do not believe any welding is required, plus its quite large.

So hoping there is still a source wither new or used.

Thanks

Jeff

See link above. They will still do folding vinyl roofs. A correct size & shape of hole will be cut out of your roof. Then the kit is attached by Pop rivets. I've had them fitted to a number of my cars over the years. They are now a lot more refined. Suggest you contact them at the address provided. They are the best around.

Thanks for the info. Might you have a few photos of the installation on a MK 2 or similar car.

By the way, the car profiles in your post is beyond beautiful.

Thanks

Jeff

Thanks for the kind words. I have 500GB of pics & my filing is awful. I might have one on an S Type. Please be patient & I will search. I've been studying the minutiae of S types for 30 years while traveling globally 230 days a year in the execution of my Oilco job.

Hear is a DB6 to contemplate while I search for Jags. They pull down taught on the roof when closed. No air or water leaks etc. and a push up tinted wind deflector.

Here is one closed. People just don't photograph cars to show off the sunroof.

This is the best you are going to find as examples. They are available in many colours. Sorry it took so long but my Mk2 filing is not a priority. Phew that took some searching. They have become a lot more sophisticated & neater than when this old clunker had it fitted. We still fit them in SA but the finished job is far neater. They also fit a clear surrounding decal that prevents any paint marking.

Very nice examples.

So if I understand, the Webasto folding roof kit is still available from the web site you provided. We would like to find one here in US with sunroof, but are hard to find and a lot more expensive. Thus if we can find a solid non sunroof car, in time we would like to install the large folding unit.

Thanks again

Jeff

My goodness. Why would you want to destroy the originality of a 55 to 63 year old original MK2 by putting in a sunroof?
If you want a sunroof there are plenty of modern cars available in your part of the world which have sunroofs.
Because of your recent joining to this forum I don't believe you understand the background, affinities and attitudes associated with these early Jaguars
Please re-think your ideas about modifications.

Very well said and I do believe you make a correct argument. But I know there were MK2 that came with two types of sunroofs so I was exploring the possibility of enjoying the openness of the sunroof. Since I live in Florida, the real necessity is AC and I do see there are kits available. That would be our first option.

Again thanks for your candor.

Bill Mac knows my feelings towards modifying an original 1960s Jaguar and I have not been shy about voicing my opinion but in this case I agree that if the item was an available option in the 1960s which Webasto tops were then I see no harm in fitting one. Yes it is pretty radical cutting the roof out but as long as it is in keeping with the era then no problem Would love to do it to my S type but my toes curl up at the thought of making that first cut in the roof.

Hi Jeff,
I too, am stickler for originality. But I would add options that were available. These include original A/C system, sunroof, fog/driving lights, steering wheels, switch from steel to wire wheels, swapping from RHD to LHD with OEM parts and some that weren't like a 5 spd trans.

Glyn, gave you a good lead on the original fabric sunroof supplier. Please let us know what you find out!

I'm fairly liberal on modifs, especially in the spirit of the time. For me, a sunroof is a negative feature. My DD6 has an excellent steel one that's rarely opened. Sometimes, I've opened it a few inches to help warm air leave after the car has stood in the sun, but a window would have done almost as well, and I've closed it within a couple of minutes. A Rover P6 2000 that I owned decades ago had a full length Webasto and it received the same sort of use. We had a Ford Fiesta with tilt and slide - never used, leaked buckets, and I glued it shut. If it's sunny, they let in too much sun. If you're traveling moderately quickly, they're unpleasant. They need maintenance, particularly the drainage system. The one on the Rover let water in, though not as much as the Ford. I'm more likely to weld one up than fit one.

The positive of the Webasto Vinyl roof is zero drainage system required. It seals to the roof.

They still supply Webasto South Africa with them & all the fancy new varieties. They are a German Company.

They are period correct.

This is the original metal sunroof that Webasto made for Jaguar. These need their drainage maintained.

Sorry ~ this one is in shocking condition in a junkyard.

Glyn, I'm sure they seal well to the roof when they are new, but the Webasto on my Rover was a few years old. The leak wasn't severe and only present when the car was moving. But it was enough to dampen and leave water marks on the headlining.
