Default What is this component in my engine bay?

Need help to identify the thing in the picture.
Ihave a shop manual, and I tried to go over each page but still couldnt say what is this. Its printed on some pic in the manul, but it seems nothing is talking about it.
Just learning the car, any help would be appreciated.

Really? Wow, I had never seen a wiper motor placed here.... It have some kind of metal tube like a brake ling or something connects to it, I was thinking its something related to that.. Thanks

Yes, inside the tube is a metal rod that is ribbed. The wheelboxes at each wiper have a gear that meshs into those ribs. The wiper motor has a crank, sort of like steam locomotive's wheel and rod arrangement to convert the motors rotary motion into back and forth. The ribbed rod then goes back and forth in the tube and that's what makes the wipers go back and forth.

Never seen one colour code painted to the colour of the car. Normally they are a silver colour. No disrespect but it looks like someone has in the past given the car a respray and not bothered to either remove or mask up the wiper motor before painting the inside of the engine bay.

The DR3 was fitted to all of the MK1,MK2, S types and I think the 420.
I have lost count of the number I have rebuilt/repaired .Definitely 20+
The upper end fittings should be good old diecasting without any further colour added.
By the way did you know that the wheel box light alloy cover has a manufactured date stamp?
Cheers

Bill I have 3 DR3 motors for future rebuilding.
The DR3 in my '65 S type is faster than the wiper motor in my '84 XJ-6 which is a slug.
Is there a way to adapt a DR3 to a XJ-6 ?? It is after all, a similar cable system.
The only difference is the Delayed Wipe function in the XJ-6 motor which the DR3 does not have.

Jose
The method of control of the DR3 is, as far as I know, quite different to the XJ6 wiper system.
I have had S2XJ6s and still have a S3XJ6 and the wipers in them worked OK if looked after
I would be inclined to go after your problem with a bit of fault finding.
One area I have found in these cable systems is internal binding due to old grease drying out in the cable.
It would be worthwhile removing the drive cable, cleaning it and re-lubricating it for a start. I had one so bound up in a S2XJ6 that it ended up breaking the cable.
The cable gear boxes can get sticky with old lubricants needing a hit with penetrating oil to free up
Finally the wiper motor itself may have problems eg shorting in the field windings reducing power output.
I know this XJ6 advice actually belongs in another forum but the overall wiper advice also applies in this forum.
Cheers

Bill is spot on. The tube that the rack runs in must have no dents & be spotless & lubricated with new grease. The rack must be clean. I actually replaced mine (3 pieces 84, 85, 86) with plated fuel pipe of correct dimensions with correctly flared ends to hold in the wheel boxes. And don't leave out the tailpiece that comes after the 2nd wheelbox & seems to go nowhere (86). It is vital to the operation of the 2nd wheelbox. My main piece was dented. They bind very easily.

There is a whole thread here with pics.

Correct position: If you look past all the other junk it is in the correct position. (still under build ~ corrections made after this)

Sorry, that was a misunderstanding - the "wrong position" did not apply to anything written here, but I wrote a lengthy text here accidentally, as your thread came directly under another entry (reg. the new S-Type door handle bezel). I did not notice, I am already in the next thread at first, but then deleted my entry here, noting that I removed my text here and moved it to the correct spot (=thread). But you have a nice clean engine of an old S-Type - very nice.
