LIke all these factories in the UK motor industry of the time, (Ford were the exception), everything was piecework. Management and unions agreed a rate per piece and this made changes during production extremely difficult, as all the piecework rates had to be renegotiated. My neighbour who worked at Rolls Royce here in Crewe told me about sending body shells back to Cowley (near Oxford) due to quality failures. Obviously, the price for the 'piece' assumed all the work was done correctly, a big assumption !!
