Cass, I don't remember the top dash being that difficult to remove _ there are two 1/4 inch bolts on either end that are undone.
The steering wheel is then set in its most outer position, the dash should rotate and be angled out in such a way to free itself form the car, but I can't remember if the windscreen pillar wood needs to be removed.
Never worked on a Mk2 but on the S Type the dash top has four 7/16 nuts on long studs for which access is gained from under the dash. Hard to locate and you need a deep 7/16 socket on an extension bar to get over the end of the stud thread and on to the nut. One on the passengers side is located via the glove box where there is a hole in the top to get to the nut. (Might be the same on the MK2). Dash top on the S Type is hard to manoeuvre with the steering wheel in situ and the side wood definitely has to come off. I will rephrase and say fiddly rather than difficult.
Brilliant response guys. Thank you. However I have to explain my predicament better I think. The car is left hand drive and the wipers do park nicely on the left-hand (driver's) side but my dilemma is that during operation the driver's side wiper is barely making it past vertical as it sweeps to the left. Consequently the majority of the screen in front of the driver is left un-wiped. The only time that part gets wiped is when the wipers are turned off and they sweep that part on the way to their parked destination. Phew!! that was a long explanation... sorry.
If I was sitting on the right hand side of the car, I would be happy, as that side is wiped all the way across. Does that make sense?

Swap over the left & right wheelbox. On many Jaguars the wheelboxes that the rack runs in are sided. Yours might be one of those. Also listen to Peter above re ~ moving to an unworn portion of the wheels in the boxes.

In SA we don't suffer the wear issue we use the wipers so seldom. What we suffer is the grease hardening in the tubes the rack runs in. (due to oil fraction loss) requiring us to remove the rack & clean it, clean out the tubes & re-grease. The innards of my 90,000 mile motor & crank wheel looked as new. Not even wear on the brushes or commutator. And no it has never been replaced. The car belonged to a Doctor from new that kept immaculate records.

The upper dash rail on a MK2 is extremely easy to get off.
It is held on by two 1/4 inch bolts roughly 8 inches (200mm) in from each end.
A 7/16 AF spanner will loosen off the nuts and there are 2 wires to be disconnected from a dash lamp in the centre.
I endorse Glyn's remarks on dried out grease hardening in the tubes and the need to clean out the system and regrease.
That also applies to the wiper motor wheel box.
I have rebuilt about a dozen wiper motors for myself and local Jag club members and have only put new brushes into a couple.
The major problem again and again is the deterioration of the electrical fly leads Lucas DR3 with new fly leads
Yes Bill ~ Absolute endorsement from me. Excuse arrow & cover screw still at platers ~ they lost one ~ Grrr! Earth screw shown for another post. As you have said before ~ earth to body is critical as unit is rubber grommet mounted.
