Unhappy 1985 xj6 vdp

We are the original proud owners of a 1985 xj6 VDP with 75,000 miles. Unfortunately we are having problems with the fuel system. This model has two fuel tanks. When you crank the car the fuel is pumped from the driver side tank into the passenger side tank. This causes a major overflow of gas out of the filling cap. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how we can resolve this issue.
Thanks,
Tom

Welcome aboard. Great choice in Jags. Those Series IIIs are great....built like a tank and drive like velvet.

Here's info on diagnosing and repairing the tank changeover system:

Fuel Tank Switchover Checklist, Series III XJ6

Fuel is supposed to return to the same tank it's drawn from. That's not happening in your case, obviously. One of the return valves id probably on the blink.

Cheers

Many thanks DD! This Jag has been in our family since 1985 when we bought it new. It has been garaged all of its life and looks like new. This fuel problem has become a major issue that has resulted in the car being unusable.
Best regards,
Tom
