1988 xj6
I just bough and 1988 xj6 with 124,000 miles on it,just want to know what you guys think. The door handles will need to be replaced,it needs a few new wood peaces well one peace the one around the shifter. The seats are perfect and it rides smooth and runs out well. My only worry is that when I first put in in drive it didn't go in gear. I put it back in park and then put it back in drive it went in gear fine after that and ran fine. The trans fluid was bright pink and no smell of burning the oil was clean and the engine ran perfect. It started on the first try with no problems. Also it rode very very smooth. But when you hit a hard bump it bottomed out and made a very hard to hear clang sound from the back. I am only paying 1000 for this car and know that it will need some work to get it back to what it was. I just dont want a nightmare from hell that takes forever to fix. I finish paying for it next week end and take it home. I love the car but I am nervous about it,I have owned many many bmws and benz and even an audi 5000. I know a lot about how cars work and how to fix them but Never had nor worked on a jaguar. So how hard is it and could this be a night mare.

Welcome,
Congrats on your biting the bullet . My opinion is on the XJ40s (pre Ford ) isn't very promising at all. The broken door handles are unique to those years as well.
Repair is not as easy at it looks . Beware of hydraulic self levelling (if your ride has got this option ) too .
Another issue which you might be able to see is tires . (220 65 VR 390 ) However you can replace your wheels too if you like but each upgrade means $$$$ which is not cost effective

I will make pics soon I love this car. It needs some new wood a new cat for the hood, the clear coat polished out. The only major problem i can see is the blower motors, and the short with the radio and over head lights. It comes and goes I think it needs a new right hand fuse box. The aux fuse looks like it burnt at one time,I cleaned it up but from time to time I have to move the fuse or it goes off. Before this car I had a benz 300e and I can say i would buy this car over the benz in a heart beat. I talked the person down to 700 for the car( she helped me out big time). I dont see why these cars get such a bad rap, they seam like good cars. You have to clean the conectors every now and then i would guess to keep things from shorting out. But this has to be the smoothest car I have every own. I will post pics soon as I can get some, I think God i got this car and hope it is a good one. It only had 124k on it so I thought i couldnt go wrong with that low of miles. I seafoamed it that help a lot,I change the oil and trans oil tomorrow. Then put a cd player in it and then save and make like new again. until next time Jaguar dream and cat wishes.:-)
Peace
