Default 1989 Daimler Lock Problem

Driver door is open but lock frozen in closed mode making it impossible to close door and, therefore, drive vehicle. Have tried to remove lower door panel to access the lock mechanism (upper panel removed with no problem) but neither the Jag nor Haynes repair manuals show the type of lower panel as in my car. In looking at how the passenger side worked, I inadvertently blocked that too!

Welcome to the forum 3jags,

Your 1989 Daimler will be the XJ40 style and not the earlier Series III?

If so, follow this link XJ40 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum for help and advice with the door problem.

Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User ID button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.

Graham

Thanks for the words of encouragement Bryce. Other than frustrating lock issue, car runs just fine. Unfortunately no suitable garage nearby and anyway, can't put the car on the road.

Getting nowhere with removing Daimler lower driver door panel so decided to remove the one on my '93 XJ6 to see how it works. Was a breeze. Came off with absolutely no problem. The issue with Daimler seems to be how the armrest is secured. There's a single covered screw access on underside but can't for the life of me see how to unscrew and detach it. Zero visibility. Not even certain that the armrest needs to come off but, afraid that if it does, just forcing the panel might do a lot of damage. Any ideas out there? I'm mechanically challenged

As suspected, the issue was the removal of the armrest. On the Daimler -- and Majestic -- while it appears to be a single piece it is, in fact, in two parts. The plastic plug on the underside has to be removed and the top half of the armrest detached by sliding it towards the rear of the car which then reveals the three screws attaching it to the door. Once these are removed, it is really easy to detach the lower panel. It took about 5 minutes. To be honest, I'm not sure how I unblocked the lock. I tried all the synchronisation methods, jiggled the inside and outside opening devices many times -- with and without the battery connected -- and, doused the locks with loads of WD40. Suspect this last operation played a significant role.
Actually found the relevant lead on the Jag-Lovers forum. A 2008 post indicated that the respondant was having the same problem with a Majestic. He had listed his e-mail, I contacted him and the next day received photos of the step by step process for panel removal. Amazing! The post is " Majestic door uphostery trim panels -- removal instructions". The photos can also be found at electricrobert.com/jaguar.

With the Daimler -- and two other old jags -- I'll certainly be back looking for more
assistance. In the meantime, thanks to those who offered word of encouragement.
