Default 1995 Jaguar Vanden Plas

About two months agao, I was driving along the highway at 60 miles an hour and the engine suddenly shut down without any cautions or lights on the dash. After I got it back to my house, I had a mechanic look at it and he found out that the lower timing chain had broken. Actually, he was not sure if the lower timing chain had broken or if the left hand upper timing chain damper had broken, logged itself in the lower timing chain, and caused the lower timing chain to break. He is not sure what kind of damage the engin has as of yet. I bought an upper and lower timing chain. The upper timing chain came with a master link, but the lower timing chain did not. He wants to install both chains to be able to do a compression test and see if the valves are an issues with the head. He does have it in timing. The upper chain was no problem to install since it had a master link, but since the lower timing chain has no master link he is not able to install the chain without the proper tool to take it apart. Any help with installing the lower timing chain will be very much appreciated. Then at least we can move on to see if we have compression in the cylinders.

Default 1995 Jaguar Vanden Plas Timing chain

I forgot to list the type of engine in my last post. It is a six cylinder, 4.0 L. I have looked in the forum and only found instructions for an 8 cylinder, and not a six. I am new to this forum, if the information is available, please direct me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the information. A little bit more update on my jaguar. I found out that the 4.0L engine has three chains on it and not just two: One for the camshafts to the idler, one from the crankshaft to idler to turn the camshafts, and one from the oil pump to the crankshaft. I finally got all of the chains on and the camshaft position sensor in position. It will start, but with the assistance of a bit of accelerator to keep it going. It runs very rough. I did a compression check, and I only have compression on the numbers 2, 4, and 6 cylinders (150 psi or better). I have NO compression on the numbers 1, 3, and 5 cylinders. As I said before in my first posting, I was going down the road at 65 MPH and the engine just shut off. After taking the engine apart, I found out a bolt came loose from one of the upper chain guards and ended up breaking the primary timing chain. Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I also have a 95 SJ6 VDP 4.0 L. I have 99k miles on mine. Just to be curious, how many miles do you have on your jag? Mine seems to be running fine.
Thanks
Terry
