My wife has always wanted a Jag and being a car enthusiast, the only Jag I like is the XJR. Only problem is it scares the hell out of me! I don't know anything about them other than they improved after the Ford merger?
I just found a beautiful 99 with 62,000 miles. What should I look for, is the XJR a dependable Jag? Do they get horrible gas mileage, are they do-it-yourself maintenance friendly? Can they be a daily driver and expect to be driven many miles?
Will anyone give me some advice...PLEASE??![Smile](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I've owned several Porsche 928's and feel very comfortable with them, but not sure about Jags.
Thanks,
Darien

Those models had the "Nickasil" cylinder liners in their engines. They are prone to failure from sulphur in the fuel ruining the liners . Unless you know all about this engine's condition or if its too cheap to be true, you'll be stuck with a lemon. Beware!

I'm thinking about a XJR myself.

I bought a XJR 1999 2 years ago second hand with about 60k miles. At 10k miles it got a new engine because of thermical problems on guarantee. With 35k miles another major repair on the engine was executed. With 70k miles on cylinder 3 a new piston ring set had to be fixed. And now with 80k miles the same has probably be done with cylinder 7. I still hope that it is not the piston but may be the head gasket or a valve but I am not sure
. I would recommand to get a newer car!

YEA NOT A GOOD IDEA. Unless you look forward to replacing engines and trannys in the NEAR future. Do a search on these forums you'll see what everyones talking about. Aim for a 2001 at the very least. Theres good reasons why the 98, 99, and some 00's are as cheap as they are!
