Default 2005 x type cv axle

Last week I had two tires replaced. They moved my rear tires to the front. After that, I started hearing some clunking noises, and could feel the clunk in the steering wheel. I assumed it was the tire, so went on my 225 mile trip to celebrate our anniversary. On the way home, 160 miles to go, all of a sudden on the freeway, a very loud metal on metal grinding sound. I thought maybe it was the tire on that road, until clickity clack. It started making really loud clicking noises. So I pulled off, and a mechanic at a gas station said it sounded like the axle had gone south. I got back on the freeway, to hit the next offramp, where there was a motel. But as soon as I hit the end of the onramp, that noise went away. I still have the clunks with every turn of the wheel. But no more grinding or other loud noises. Once I am home, I lift the car in the air and notice that if I touch the tire, it feels loose. But all the lug nuts are tight. My stepdad came over, and I showed him the rotor was moving in and out. We are thinking the AXLE is in need of replacing. If so, how hard is it to replace that axle on the driver's side (left side)? Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Welcome to the forum Gary,

Good to have you here with us at Jaguar Forums.

Sorry to hear mechanical issues spoiled your return trip.

No replies to your question about the axle in X-Type tech section as yet but things could be a bit slow with everyone getting ready for the holidays.

For more regular issues, t
he 'HOW TO' thread at the top of X-Type tech section is a good place to start for info on regular issues.

Thanks for the welcome. I called a mechanic today, and he said he would put in a CV axle for $375. I take it in to him on Thursday. Hopefully, he says the same thing then.

$375 (£230) doesn't sound unreasonable.

I hope it's a straightforward repair and he finds nothing worse.

Yeah, well it was $15 cheaper than changing the axle. They charged me $105 for the bearing. I liked the fact, that I went in there with an axle in the car, and they didn't replace it. That gave me some trust. But I could have bought a new bearing from the Auto Store for $27.99. So I didn't like that, and will be contacting them for that reason, I may not return.
