I have always had a soft spot for wagons (estates all you fine folks across the pond). There is just something special about their proportions and long clean lines. I probably first fell in love with them as a kid when I saw a 1990 BMW 5 Series (E34) wagon in a showroom. Naturally, I thought the next generation (E39) wagon's where just about the best car on the planet -- if only they came in M5 clad with a manual transmission in the states! From there I flirted with the idea of a CTSV wagon, but they were out of my price range at the time and exceedingly rare to find an unmolested example. By the time I had the means to realize my wagon dreams, I somehow found myself in a 2017 Grabber Blue Mustang GT. What can I say, my taste in cars is varied.
Early this year, I came across several Jalopnik articles detailing how these relatively rare Jaguar XF Sportbrakes could be found in dealers at $25-30K off retail. I was immediately smitten by the Sportbrake's great design. Out of curiosity, I thought, maybe there are a couple CPO examples that somehow slipped through the cracks for an even better deal -- and it'd be swell if I could find one in Red. Sure enough, Autotrader had one pop up (uh oh), and it was within driving distance (oh boy...)
So I grabbed the Mrs. and our new pup, and drove the still fairly new Mustang up to Maine for a test drive. We left with a different car than the one we drove to Maine.
The Car:
2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake
Firenze Red on Black Interior
AWD Supercharged 6 w/ 380 HP
13k Miles on the Odometer
Black Pack (Trim/wheels)
Tech/Stereo Upgrade Package
Comfort/Convenience
Driver Assist
Luxury Interior Upgrade... The point is, every box was checked...
The car had been sitting on the lot for 160 days where it started at $62k down from the window sticker of $84k. By the time I showed up, it was down to $52k. Honestly, who in the United States wants a red Jaguar station wagon other than me and like 3 other people? I had a number in mind and I was not going to budge - happy to walk away with my GT. Long story short(er), I had them extend the warranty to 6 year 100k miles (because Jaguar) and bought the car for $48k and change. I might have lost my shirt a little on the trade in for the Mustang, but I still feel like I got the better end of that deal. By the way - the guys at the dealer where fantastic.
I am about a month into ownership and I love it more and more each day. It's fun, and just so damn practical. For the life of me, I don't understand why anyone would buy an SUV (probably in White, Black, or Silver), when you can get just as capable (if anything more so) of a vehicle in wagon form. Different folks, different strokes -- I guess.
If you're still reading - good for you! I'll give a little more background. My grandfather had a Jag as long as I could remember, so I am sort of brand loyal as a result. He had the following:
XJ6
XJ8 Vanden Plas
XJR (x2)
XJS (which my father still owns)
At some point, I'd like to add an XJC or an XK8 (both w/ manual conversion - I know easier said than done) to the garage.
So that's my story! Look forward to reading (and learning) from all of you!
JJ
